Internet personality Perez Hilton was hospitalised this week after viewers expressed alarm during a livestream broadcast in which he appeared to self-harm. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 4 August, at the blogger’s residence in Miami, and has since raised significant concerns for his wellbeing.

Emergency services were alerted to a potential suicide at approximately 6:51 p.m. local time, as indicated by audio from the dispatch call. By 7:59 p.m., police were dispatched to the scene following reports relating to a ‘streamer known as Perez Hilton’. An update around 10:41 p.m. described the situation as a ‘suicide attempt’, prompting officers to request assistance from fire services and revealing that an active police scene had been established at the home.
The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to the situation, confirming that they were made aware of the livestream in which Hilton was engaging in acts of self-harm. Upon arrival, deputies communicated with Hilton’s family members, who indicated he was alone in the residence at the time.
In a statement, the sheriff’s office highlighted their approach to incidents involving individuals in mental health crises, prioritising de-escalation techniques. These methods aim to create space for communication that can significantly reduce the risks associated with potential ‘suicide-by-cop’ encounters and any resulting harm to the individual, officers, or the public.
Although police initially disengaged from Hilton, they continued to monitor the unfolding situation and maintained contact with his family. Later, officials confirmed that Hilton was “safely recovered” and transported to a hospital by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue services. The incident also saw the involvement of the sheriff’s Crisis Response Unit and mental health professionals, who offered support to his family.
As news of the event circulated, Hilton’s representatives took to Instagram, expressing their concern while stating they had not yet managed to reach the influencer directly. “Our primary concern is Perez’s health and wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of his family,” the statement read. They opted not to speculate on the situation until more confirmed information became available.
Known for his candid online presence, Hilton has been a prominent figure on various social media platforms, attracting millions of followers. However, following this distressing incident, his TikTok account appears to have been deactivated, prompting queries about the influencer’s mental health status and online presence.
Hilton’s recent difficulties come in the wake of a severe health scare earlier in the year when he underwent emergency surgery due to severe sepsis. In an April update shared on social media, he expressed joy at being able to walk again, albeit slowly. Hilton commented on the importance of his progress, stating, “Though the pain is still very pronounced, I can tolerate it— and do this all without meds. Amen!! Every day will get easier and I will get stronger!!! And so it shall be!”
This recent incident has echoed calls from his family and friends, including his long-time attorney Bryan Freedman, who voiced his concerns for Hilton’s health. “I, like many others, feel very concerned for Mario’s health,” Freedman stated. “This feels like a moment that deserves kindness and compassion.”
The growing concern surrounding Hilton emphasises the critical need for mental health awareness and intervention, especially for those who share their lives publicly online. His case highlights the potential dangers of social media, where individuals in distress might broadcast their struggles to an audience without adequate support or professional help.
For anyone struggling with similar issues, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline has advised them to reach out for support anytime. The call or text service on 988 is available 24/7 for those in emotional distress, facing substance use problems or needing someone to talk to.
As supporters rally for Hilton’s recovery, the situation has opened wider discussions on the mental health challenges faced by influencers, often under pressure to maintain a curated public persona while grappling with personal struggles behind the scenes. Such incidents raise the importance of prioritising well-being alongside online engagement, underscoring the need for a more compassionate and understanding approach towards mental health in the digital age.
