Authorities in Florida uncovered a disturbing case of child neglect when they rescued a severely malnourished newborn and subsequently removed three other children from a hazardous living environment in Florahome. The investigation carried out by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), alongside the Department of Children and Families (DCF), has led to charges against the mother and two additional adults.

The events unfolded on July 7, when a DCF caseworker raised concerns regarding a six-week-old baby, who exhibited severe signs of neglect, including a severe diaper rash and significant weight loss. Following this tip-off, detectives from the PCSO responded and discovered a dire situation. Detectives arrested the baby’s mother, Jodie Danielle Cannon, aged 26, at the residence. Due to existing allegations of neglect, they requested that she not accompany them to the hospital with the infant.
Upon assessment at the hospital, medical professionals were alarmed by the baby’s condition. The infant’s vital signs were reported as critically weak, to the extent that doctors indicated the child could have faced fatal consequences without the intervention of law enforcement. Cannon was subsequently charged with aggravated child neglect that resulted in great bodily harm and taken into custody on a $35,000 bond. The newborn was placed in the temporary care of DCF after being released from the hospital.
In addition to the newborn, two other children in Cannon’s care were promptly removed and placed under DCF’s guardianship. Following the initial intervention, PCSO authorities noted the appalling conditions within the home and sought a second warrant to investigate further. This warrant, granted on July 28, would allow them to search for a fourth child whom they had previously left behind due to insufficient evidence of neglect.
What they encountered upon their return was described as a “house of horrors.” The investigation revealed filthy conditions, characterised by decaying floors, rampant black mould, and animal faeces scattered throughout the property. Children were found sleeping on mattresses infested with fleas and surrounded by unsanitary living conditions. The presence of flies and even cockroaches added to the distressing environment, with one bedroom littered with leftover food and overwhelming odours emanating from the refrigerator.
Additional arrests were made during this operation, leading to the apprehension of Jordon Wilson, Cannon’s boyfriend, and his parents, Melissa, 50, and John Keal, 52, who were also charged with child neglect. Wilson is reportedly the biological father of the three older children, while the fourth child involved in this situation had previously been adopted by Melissa but is biologically related to Wilson. Despite their familial bonds, concerns regarding their care led to the removal of all children from the home.
The PCSO described the living conditions inside the house as not just neglectful but dangerous, where small children struggled to navigate hazardous flooring strewn with filth. Sheriff H.D. “Gator” DeLoach articulated his profound concerns about the impact of such an upbringing, stating, “Words cannot describe the house of horrors these children were living in.” He commended the efforts of those who stepped in to provide the children with the care and security they so desperately needed.
As of now, all four adults are being held at the Putnam County Jail, with Wilson’s bond set at $2,500 and both Melissa and John facing a $3,000 bond. Upon their first court appearance, conditions were imposed limiting their contact with the children if they are released. These individuals have been assigned regional conflict counsel due to potential conflicts of interest within the public defender’s office.
While the children now find themselves in safer environments, DeLoach made it clear that their journey towards recovery will be long and challenging. The rescued newborn is reportedly doing well, thriving and gaining weight since being saved from the harrowing situation. The case highlights critical questions surrounding child welfare and the responsibilities of caregivers in providing a safe and nurturing environment for children.
