Man Dies Weeks After Being Struck by Debris While Stopping to Help Overturned Truck on Highway

A tragic accident on a highway in Oklahoma has claimed the life of a young man, Dylan Hoyt, who was endeavouring to assist a truck driver in distress. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of 12 July, has left family and friends grappling with grief and disbelief.

Hoyt, a passionate automotive enthusiast, was travelling home with friends after an evening of street racing when they spotted an overturned tractor-trailer on the opposing side of Interstate 44. Without a moment’s hesitation, he crossed the highway to offer help, reflecting his instinctive nature to assist those in need.

Tragically, while Hoyt was at the scene, a second semi-truck collided with the overturned vehicle, sending debris flying into the area. Describing the harrowing situation, Hoyt’s mother, Melissa Hartsell, revealed the extent of her son’s injuries, stating that he was knocked 15 metres into the air by the force of impact. “The fire department said had they not seen where he landed, then they would have never found him, and he would’ve been dead,” she recounted.

The aftermath of the incident also saw the unfortunate death of 53-year-old Alejandro Martinez from Indianapolis, and 21-year-old Angel Ferrer-Delgado from Florida sustained injuries in the crash. Hoyt’s cousin, John Hale, reflected on his relative’s selfless nature, noting that he was among the first responders to the accident. “He was just trying to help that person, and unfortunately, he sacrificed his life doing so,” Hale said, highlighting the heroism that characterised Hoyt’s actions.

Weeks following the accident, Hoyt succumbed to his injuries, with the State Medical Examiner’s Office confirming his death. Hartsell shared her sorrow, emphasising her son’s caring nature and his love for both his family and the racing community. “He loved everybody. He really did,” she expressed, adding that Hoyt had plans to interview for a job as a diesel mechanic in the week following the incident.

Losing someone so young has resonated deeply within his circle of family and friends, many of whom remember him as a dedicated friend who was always quick to lend a helping hand. Cody Haskett, Hoyt’s closest friend, voiced his shock and sense of loss, stating that their bond was so strong that he feels “lost” without him. “We talked every day, hung out every single day. We were the ultimate duo,” Haskett said.
