An Indiana mother has been charged with murder following the tragic death of her five-month-old son, Greyson Lee Cunningham, who died at their home in Shipshewana on April 6. The case has attracted significant attention after the circumstances surrounding Greyson’s death were revealed in an autopsy and subsequent police investigation.

According to a recent autopsy report, Greyson was found to have severe head injuries which caused considerable swelling and bleeding between his scalp and skull. These injuries were deemed incompatible with an accidental cause, prompting further scrutiny into the circumstances leading to his death.
The investigation commenced when police received emergency calls from a friend of Chantel Cunningham, Greyson’s mother, who reported her sounding extremely distressed. Upon arriving at the Cunningham home, officers found the infant unresponsive, cold, and limp on the bed. Sadly, Greyson was pronounced dead approximately an hour later.

In the months that followed, investigators noted that Chantel’s account varied repeatedly. She initially claimed to have suffered multiple seizures on the day of the incident, stating that in the course of these episodes, she dropped Greyson several times. However, police uncovered that she had not been adhering to her prescribed medication for seizures in the months preceding her son’s death, as reported by local news outlets.
Moreover, investigators uncovered troubling online activity on Chantel’s phone. Just prior to making the distressing call to her friend, she reportedly searched for how to “quickly heal a baby bruise”, raising further questions about her narrative surrounding Greyson’s injuries.
The autopsy revealed multiple injuries, including those around Greyson’s eyes, and confirmed the severity of trauma he had suffered. The findings have led law enforcement to conclude that such injuries could not have been inflicted accidentally, adding weight to the charges brought against Chantel.
Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not disclosed any potential motive behind the alleged crime. As of now, Chantel Cunningham faces one count of murder and one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death. Court records indicate charges were formally filed earlier this month.
In the wake of this tragic event, Greyson is being commemorated online as a joyful child, noted for his laughter and playful nature. A heartfelt tribute states that he enjoyed kicking and playing with his hands and had a special bond with his parents.
As the community grapples with this devastating loss, Greyson’s case prompts a renewed focus on child safety and abuse prevention. Officials urge anyone who suspects child abuse to reach out for help and report concerns.
Chantel Cunningham’s legal representation and any potential court date details have yet to be clarified at this time, creating a sense of uncertainty as the investigation continues. The case will undoubtedly be closely followed as it unfolds in the legal system.
