**Connecticut Man Suffers Shark Bite While Snorkelling in the Bahamas**

A Connecticut man has found himself recovering after an unexpected encounter with a Caribbean reef shark during a family trip to the Bahamas, which was meant to be a celebration of his 40th wedding anniversary.
John Schweizer, a 69-year-old resident of Niantic, was participating in a snorkelling adventure with his wife Marcy and their adult sons, Tom and Joey, when the incident occurred on July 24. According to reports, as the family snorkelled in the warm waters off the Bahamian coast, John’s serene excursion took a drastic turn when a shark bit his left shin and dragged him underwater.
“It was so fast, so immediate that you knew it happened. No doubt about it,” John recounted in a statement to NBC Connecticut, reflecting on the suddenness of the attack. His son Tom witnessed the moment the shark emerged beneath his father before John realised the gravity of the situation.
In the immediate aftermath, his wife expressed concern when Tom shouted that his father had been bitten. “It pulled me under for a second,” John recalled, describing the initial shock of the experience. Once back on the boat, the family quickly noticed the severity of the situation, as John was bleeding significantly. To manage the blood loss, they used towels and improvised tourniquets while getting him back to their cruise ship.
Once on board, John received urgent medical attention from an emergency doctor who stitched up his wounds, resulting in a total of 26 stitches in his leg and four in his hand. After this initial treatment, he was transferred to a hospital in Miami. Fortunately, John was able to return home the following day, as he was recovering well enough to walk.
The snorkelling excursion was intended to be the highlight of John’s anniversary trip. He had anticipated beautiful diving in clear waters and was eager to enjoy the experience of swimming alongside sharks. Reflecting on what should have been a joyful occasion, John expressed his disappointment at how quickly things changed. “Beautiful diving. Beautiful clear water and we dove with the sharks,” he had said prior to the incident.
Upon returning to his neighbourhood in Niantic, John was greeted in a light-hearted manner, as his neighbours donned shark costumes to welcome him back. “That’s my neighbourhood, and they’re wonderful people,” he shared, appreciating their support during his recovery.
Despite the fact that Caribbean reef shark attacks are deemed rare, with the Florida Museum of Natural History documenting only four such incidents with no fatalities, John’s experience has understandably left a lasting impression on him. He reported that the guides had reassured his family that Caribbean reef sharks were not typically aggressive and suggested that they enter the water with some urgency to avoid startling any nearby sharks.
John, a retired financial adviser and an avid fisherman, has had prior encounters with sand tiger sharks in the waters off Long Island Sound in Connecticut. However, the experience of being bitten has altered his perspective on encounters with sharks. When asked if he would consider swimming with sharks again in the future, his response was unequivocal. “No. Not at all and I won’t do it again,” he stated firmly.
As John Schweizer continues his recovery, his experience serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife encounters and the importance of safety measures when engaging in water activities.
