Spencer Evans, the Special Agent in Charge at the FBI’s Las Vegas office, spoke to the severity of Phelps’ actions, labelling them as “a romance scam on steroids.” He highlighted the vulnerability of individuals seeking companionship, caught in the crossfire of Phelps’ malicious tactics. “It’s folks that are out looking for love that ran into something far more sinister,” Evans stated, as referenced by the Associated Press.
In a particularly chilling incident, another victim, who began dating Phelps in November 2022, was purportedly drugged. He was then transported across the US-Mexico border in a wheelchair, only to later be discovered deceased in a hotel room in Mexico City.
Phelps, who holds dual citizenship in the US and Mexico, was apprehended by authorities in Mexico and subsequently sentenced to 37 years in prison regarding Erbach’s case in June 2023. She now anticipates extradition back to the United States to confront grave charges, including fraud, identity theft, and kidnapping arising from her alleged criminal activities in Nevada.
In a statement to The Los Angeles Times, her husband, William Phelps, expressed his disbelief and shock at the accusations against his wife. “If she did do it, damn, she put one over on me,” he remarked, revealing that he had known Aurora for 14 years when she worked as a server at IHOP.
