Rescue operations for British surfer Arran Strong have been officially suspended after the 28-year-old was reported missing off the coast of Portugal earlier this week. Strong, who has represented Great Britain at multiple international competitions, vanished on Monday while surfing near Carrapateira, and authorities have now declared him presumed dead following extensive search efforts.

The Autoridade Maritima Nacional (AMN) revealed that they were alerted to Strong’s disappearance around 11:30 a.m. on Monday. Officials indicated that he was last seen while attempting to cross from Monte Clerigo beach to Carrapateira. At the time, Strong was accompanied by his coach, Jose Maria Pyrrait, who had taken a break with him to drink some water and capture a few photographs before the tragic incident unfolded.
Pyrrait recounted the moments leading up to Strong’s disappearance, expressing devastation over the loss. “We were talking for a few minutes when I let him go ahead,” he explained. “I usually do this because my pace is faster; I would typically catch up with him and wait. This time, however, things took a drastic turn.” When Pyrrait eventually paused to wait for Strong, he noticed the surfer’s board drifting approximately 100 metres away.
In a frantic attempt to locate Strong, Pyrrait immediately paddled towards the board, diving repeatedly into the surf to search for his missing companion. “The water was deep, and visibility was very limited,” he recalled. “I called my partner on land for help, who quickly initiated a rescue operation.” Despite the swift response, his efforts proved futile as both he and a local fisherman spent over two and a half hours searching the area without success.
On Thursday, July 30, the AMN announced that the rescue mission would cease, conveying sorrow over a situation that was becoming increasingly desperate. “Unfortunately, he is still missing, and the chances of him being alive are practically zero,” Pyrrait stated, highlighting the grim reality of the circumstances.
The professional surfing community is mourning the loss of Arran Strong, who was not only a talented athlete but also a beloved teammate and respected figure in the sport. GB Surfing issued a heartfelt statement expressing their profound sadness over Strong’s presumed passing. “Arran proudly represented Great Britain at the 2024 and 2025 ISA World Surf Games, finishing as our highest-placed male surfer on both occasions,” they noted.
