Missing Man Was Last Seen Getting Out of a Taxi. Nearly 3 Years Later, Hikers Found His Remains Along Narrow Ridge

Authorities have confirmed the identification of human remains discovered earlier this month as belonging to Shawn Michael Dixon Sr., a man who went missing in September 2023. This tragic development has prompted a death investigation led by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Shawn, 44 years old at the time of his disappearance, was last seen exiting a taxi in Cañon City, Colorado, on 12 September 2023. A witness reported that he was last spotted around Rudd Avenue and North 11th Street, close to Rudd Park, where he was believed to be on his way to meet family at Triangle Park later that evening. However, he never arrived, raising initial concerns for his safety.

The Cañon City Police Department initially conducted a search for Dixon and attempted to gather information by interviewing his associates and publicising his disappearance on social media. As time progressed, it became apparent that they had exhausted all investigative avenues. Consequently, they sought the assistance of the CBI in March 2024. At that stage, they believed that Dixon could have been in a precarious situation when he went missing.

Cañon City Police Chief John Schick noted the specific challenges that arise when investigating cases involving missing individuals experiencing homelessness. He expressed concern over the difficulties in tracking people who are transient, as they often lack identification and may avoid contact with law enforcement for various reasons. Chief Schick indicated that individuals in this demographic face numerous vulnerabilities that could place them at risk.

While earlier efforts to locate Dixon proved fruitless, the case took a significant turn when hikers uncovered remains near Skyline Drive, a narrow roadway characterised by steep ridges in Cañon City. The discovery occurred on 19 July, and it wasn’t until this week that the CBI confirmed the identity of the remains as belonging to Dixon.

Triangle Park, where he was reportedly en route to meet his family, is situated approximately half a mile from the beginning of Skyline Drive and around two miles from where the road concludes. It remains unclear how or why Dixon ended up in that location. The CBI has not yet released details regarding the circumstances surrounding his death or the results of any conducted autopsy.

Investigators are eager to gather further information and have urged anyone who may know anything about Dixon’s disappearance or the events leading to his death to come forward.
