In the first episode of his new series, ‘Debt Intervention’, financial expert George Kamel provides invaluable support to a young couple grappling with significant debt. Rich and Ami, both in their thirties, appeared on the show to confront their daunting $85,000 consumer debt, revealing their ongoing struggle to achieve financial stability.

The couple, who have been married for two years, have managed to reduce their initial debt from approximately $123,000. However, their financial situation remains complex, with a negative net worth estimated at around £46,816. By collaborating with Kamel on the show, they hoped to develop a clearer strategy to not only pay down their debt but also to realise their dreams of homeownership and starting a family.
Rich and Ami currently reside in Ami’s mother’s basement as they work to regain financial footing. They collectively earn around £100,000 a year, yet the burden of credit card debt, alongside other loans, has taken a toll on their emotional well-being. In the episode, Ami candidly shared her feelings of inadequacy due to their situation, stating, “I had huge imposter syndrome when I first started my job because I’m like, ‘Who am I to call people and tell them to pay their bills if we can’t even do it?’”
In total, the couple’s assets amount to about £38,100, including $600 in their checking account, $1,000 in savings, and roughly $28,000 in retirement savings. The breakdown of their debt reveals that credit card debts alone account for about $36,600, alongside additional obligations like student loans and car payments, which total to approximately $48,246.
Kamel, using the EveryDollar budgeting tool, pointed out the couple’s challenging circumstances and made a startling observation about their current trajectory. While Ami had optimistically calculated that they could be debt-free by November 2027, Kamel’s analysis suggested a more realistic timeline of 2031 unless substantial changes were made in their financial habits. To meet Ami’s ambitious target, they would need to carve out an additional $7,000 each month towards their repayments.
Guiding the couple through a detailed budget review, Kamel identified ways they could cut costs. The results were surprising; by eliminating unnecessary expenses, including dining out and cancelling their Amazon Prime subscription, they discovered an additional $2,850 to apply towards their debts each month. “It’s going to take some pretty intense sacrifices to come up with that,” Kamel advised, emphasising the importance of commitment during this challenging time.
Kamel illustrated the power of their newfound strategy, explaining that with the additional funds, they could potentially pay down over $61,000 of their outstanding debts in just 13 months. This approach offered a new sense of hope, allowing the couple to see a feasible pathway out of their financial predicament. “It’ll be tight, but we can make this happen,” Kamel noted, instilling a sense of motivation in Rich and Ami.
As the episode progressed, Kamel underlined the necessity for the couple to remain focused on their ultimate goals. “You guys need to keep front and centre the reasons why you’re doing this,” he said, reminding them of their aspirations to move out of Ami’s mother’s home, start a family, and enjoy the little luxuries without fear of financial repercussions.
The episode highlights the importance of financial literacy and the impact of expert guidance in managing debt. By confronting their challenges head-on and making significant lifestyle changes, Rich and Ami embark on a journey of financial recovery. Their story serves as a reminder of the resilience required to tackle overwhelming debt, and the potential rewards that come from dedicated efforts to change one’s financial destiny.
As the couple continues on this path, they carry with them not just a plan to eliminate debt, but also a renewed sense of hope for their future, demonstrating that with determination and the right support, financial freedom is indeed within reach.
