Romeo Bongiovi, the son of legendary rock musician Jon Bon Jovi, has opened up about his long-standing dream of pursuing a career in music. The 22-year-old artist, who is a member of the rock band Lawn, expressed his commitment to music during an interview as part of The Dory Jackson Interview series.
In a conversation published on July 29, 2024, Bongiovi revealed that his passion for music ignited when he was just 16 years old. He recounted a transformative experience touring a music school in Miami, which he felt instantly drawn to. “For the longest time in middle school, when I knew I wanted to do music, I was like, ‘Man, but if you go to a college for music, you’re a total poser,’” he candidly reflected, illuminating his youthful perspective on pursuing formal education in the arts.
As he progressed through high school, Bongiovi’s attitude towards formal music education shifted. Realising he needed a clearer path forward, he chose to enrol in a music school. This decision, he noted, was pivotal, as it connected him with several now-collaborators in his musical journey. “I know that middle-school-me would probably call current-day-me a giant poser. But he was 12, so what does he know?” he joked, showcasing his growth in understanding the value of music education.
Despite having a strong passion for performance and songwriting, Bongiovi admitted that entering the world of music theory was daunting. “I didn’t know how to compose anything. I just knew that I liked music,” he said, describing his initial hesitance towards music theory as a humbling experience. This uncertainty, however, ultimately contributed to his artistic evolution.
Bongiovi credits his time at the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music with playing a vital role in shaping his career. Graduating in May, he reflected on the pivotal moments during his studies, including the serendipitous encounter with a founding member of Lawn, which occurred when he sought help with his coursework. Such connections have proven essential as he carved out his musical identity.
The musician, who is the youngest son of Jon Bon Jovi and his wife Dorothea, shared his experience of selecting the right path for him. “I remember touring Miami and seeing the campuses and being like, ‘Okay, this is for me.’ That was like the nail in the coffin. I was 16 and I knew that, ‘Okay, music is what you want to do because for the first time you really feel at home here,’” he recalled. This sense of belonging has propelled him toward a promising career.
Jon Bon Jovi, best known for his iconic hits such as “Livin’ on a Prayer,” previously expressed pride in his son’s musical endeavors. In an interview with The Independent, Bon Jovi shared that he found Romeo’s first singles to be impressive, stating, “The first singles are great. That’s all I’ve heard.” He further noted the importance of allowing his son to navigate his own path, saying, “He’s got his own vision, which I really appreciate.”
Lawn, the band Bongiovi is currently a part of, is based in Los Angeles and includes members Daniel Coppola and Cliff Dobson.
