Filmmaker Pete Ferriero has embarked on an exciting journey to uncover the bustling pizza scene in Los Angeles through his latest documentary, *The Best Pizza Is in LA*. In a project that blends culinary appreciation with a nod to popular culture, Ferriero enlisted the help of notable actors from the iconic television series *Beverly Hills, 90210*. Among those lending their star power are Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green, both keen to promote the diverse array of pizza offerings throughout Los Angeles.

Ferriero, a native of New Jersey who relocated to Los Angeles six years ago, was spurred into action by an assertion he encountered: that the City of Angels was devoid of quality pizza. “Someone from New Jersey said, ‘The hardest thing probably for you is that you can’t get any good pizza in LA,’” he recounted. Offended by this claim, he took it upon himself to prove otherwise. “I thought, ‘Not only can I get great pizza in LA, but the best pizza is in LA,’” Ferriero explained, driving the concept for his documentary.
The film showcases more than a dozen local establishments, introducing audiences to an array of pizza styles, including New York, Detroit, and even New Haven variations. The documentary features prominent culinary figures such as Nancy Silverton, known for her association with the acclaimed Pizzeria Mozza. Ferriero expressed his admiration for Silverton, stating, “I’ve been obsessed with Nancy Silverton forever,” highlighting her status as a pivotal player in the Los Angeles pizza scene.

In addition to Spelling and Green, the documentary enlists actors such as Kathleen Robertson, who also took on producing roles, and Lindsay Price, married to celebrity chef Curtis Stone. Spelling, who played Donna Martin, impressed Ferriero with her culinary knowledge. “She knows her food. She knows her pizza,” he observed, revealing the joys of engaging with both the actors and their off-screen personalities while indulging in pizza.
Despite his participation in the documentary, Green maintained his allegiance to New York pizza, yet he found the project’s concept intriguing. “I think it’s important to highlight that there are good things across the country,” he remarked, embracing the broader narrative of pizza’s cultural significance. He added, “It’s really simple, but people take pride in the preparation of it,” underscoring pizza’s communal nature as a meal that brings families together.
As the documentary unfolds, it not only applauds the craft of pizza-making but also seeks to highlight the vast culinary landscape of Los Angeles. Ferriero aimed to present the city as a bustling centre for diverse food styles, stating, “You can find any type of pizza here.” He brought on board several notable chefs and personalities from the food industry, including Brooke Williamson, who has won multiple culinary competitions, and Joe Sasto, known for his charismatic presence in foodie circles.
The documentary paints a vibrant picture of Los Angeles, depicting it as a hub for innovative food culture. Ferriero reminisced about his interactions with chefs, particularly noting that chefs validate the claim that Los Angeles houses noteworthy pizza. This sentiment resonates with him deeply as it lends credence to his mission of showcasing the city’s culinary treasures.
*Culinary excellence, community spirit, and a touch of nostalgia* characterise *The Best Pizza Is in LA*, which is available on various streaming platforms including Amazon, Apple TV, and Google Play starting July 28. With his fresh perspective, Ferriero hopes to inspire viewers to re-evaluate their perceptions of pizza in Los Angeles and embrace the vibrant community that surrounds this beloved dish.
