How Ohio County Is Caring for 16 ‘House of Horrors’ Children After They Spent 4 Years Living in Same Room

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hamden, Ohio, authorities have rescued 16 children—ranging in age from 18 months to 18 years—after a raid on their home revealed appalling living conditions. The rescue operation culminated in the arrest of the children’s parents, Elizabeth and Gary Siders II. Both are currently facing 16 counts of child neglect, alongside Gary Siders II’s parents, Christina and Gary Siders Sr., who have also been implicated in the alleged abuse. While three of the four adults are in custody, Gary Sr. has been released for medical reasons.

Following the raid, the children were swiftly taken to local hospitals for evaluation. Reports from Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson highlighted that while some children required only initial treatment, others faced more serious health issues that necessitated extended medical care. This swift response was deemed critical, as the situation could have deteriorated further had officials delayed in their intervention.

The case has drawn particular concern due to the conditions in which the children were found. Described by authorities as “almost feral,” the children were discovered living in squalid circumstances, which included being covered in bugs and exhibiting signs of significant neglect. In a news conference, Wilson revealed the grim realisation that some children bore an “inexplicable” look in their eyes, suggesting a history of trauma that has left them with limited ability to communicate.

Currently, custody of the children has been transferred to Vinton County, with the South Central Ohio Job & Family Services now responsible for their welfare. In light of the extensive needs of these children, the state of Ohio has disbursed an emergency fund totalling £1 million to support their care. The allocation of these funds underscores the gravity of the situation, as it has become apparent that many of the children will require long-term therapeutic foster care, with daily costs estimated to be between £150 and £250 for each child.

Joel Potts, Chief Government and External Affairs Officer for the Ohio Department of Children and Youth, voiced deep concerns about the funding implications for the county, which is among the poorest in Ohio and has a population of just 1,200. He indicated that meeting the children’s needs without significant financial support could lead to a crisis for the county.

Despite being born in hospitals, authorities were astonished to discover that there were minimal records documenting the existence of these children. Many neighbours expressed disbelief at the revelation that so many children had been living in their midst without anyone taking notice of their plight.

The objective moving forward is to transition these children into foster care arrangements, with a hopeful outlook on ultimately finding permanent adoption placements. Officials have decided to classify the eldest child, despite being 18, as a minor due to her cognitive limitations stemming from years of neglect.

Meanwhile, the defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against them, with Judge Laina Fetherolf setting bail at £300,000 for the three adults still in custody. Although the precise circumstances which led to the raid are not fully disclosed, public indecency charges against Gary Siders II were filed on the same day as the rescue operation, hinting at a deeper history of criminal behaviour.
