Four individuals in a vehicle became aware of the operation and fled on foot.

During their escape, one of the individuals suddenly ran across State Road 16, directly into the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer. The FHP later confirmed that the pedestrian, identified by The New York Times as a 28-year-old male, sustained fatal injuries upon being struck in the right lane of the road. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the tractor-trailer immediately stopped and attempted to assist the victim following the collision.

In the aftermath of the incident, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office reported on social media that the eastbound lanes of State Road 16, located between Outlet Mall Boulevard and Inman Road, were temporarily closed as a result of the fatal crash. ICE claimed that he had “rammed” an agency vehicle and refused to comply with multiple verbal commands prior to the shooting.
