In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Katie reflected on the couple’s love, captioning a series of wedding photos, “One year. More than yesterday, less than tomorrow. ♡. 07•11•25.” The anniversary comes just weeks after they welcomed their first child, a son named Matthew Guy Joyce, on June 20.

Katie and Devin, both aged 28, were high school sweethearts who tied the knot in 2025, a year after they had been forced to cancel their planned August 2024 wedding. This decision came following the heartbreaking deaths of Katie’s brothers, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. On August 30, 2024, the two brothers were tragically struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while biking in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. The brothers were to serve as groomsmen at the wedding, and their loss cast a long shadow over the couple’s plans.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Katie spoke about the emotional adjustments she had to make after such a loss. She expressed the difficulty in reconciling her grief with the joy of her wedding day, stating, “It’s hard to put into words how much has shifted and how much I’ve carried in my heart since last August.” She reminisced about the excitement leading up to the original event and spoke fondly of her brothers’ eagerness to celebrate their union.
Katie acknowledged that the wedding held a different significance after their deaths. “I had been trying so hard to return to that emotional space, to honour the moment as [Johnny and Matthew] would have,” she noted, although she recognised that the day would inherently be infused with sadness. Her husband, Devin, echoed this sentiment, saying that the wedding would differ greatly from what they had envisioned, highlighting the absence of two “of the most important people who should be here.”
On their special day, Katie and Devin honourably incorporated tributes to Johnny and Matthew. For instance, Katie’s bridal bouquet included specific numbers from the brothers’ hockey jerseys—21 standard roses for Matthew and 13 spray roses for Johnny. Both Devin and his groomsmen donned socks that featured these same numbers, ensuring that their memory was woven throughout the festivities.
Moreover, Katie’s father, Guy Gaudreau, wore a custom suit that had photos of the brothers stitched into its lining. The intricate details continued with Katie’s custom-made veil, which bore messages written in her brothers’ handwriting, signifying their presence as she walked down the aisle.
Katie added a handkerchief embroidered with two doves and her brothers’ initials to her wedding attire as her “something blue.” She expressed the significance of these details, stating, “These details may be small, but they carry so much meaning,” emphasising that her brothers would be remembered and celebrated in the most heartfelt ways.
After several months, the couple shared the joyful news of expecting their first child in February. Following the arrival of their son, Katie posted snippets from their new life together, expressing their delight. In subsequent posts, she documented poignant moments, like their baby’s first visit to the ice rink where his uncles had played. “According to Pop-Pop, baby Matthew has to get the smell of the rink in his lungs… we don’t make the rules, we just follow them,” she said, offering a glimpse into the family’s blend of mourning and celebration.
As Katie and Devin reflect on their past year of marriage, they continue to honour the legacies of Johnny and Matthew, weaving their memories into the fabric of their growing family. Their story serves as a testament to love’s resilience amid unimaginable loss.
