The Prince of Wales took to the streets of London on Tuesday, 13 October, engaging in an impromptu cricket match with prominent cricketers from England and India. The special event, dubbed ‘Cricket On The Mall’, unfolded on the iconic Mall — the grand thoroughfare that connects Buckingham Palace to Trafalgar Square, much to the delight of unsuspecting tourists visiting the area.

Joined by celebrated cricket figures including England’s captain Joe Root and former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane, Prince William aimed to raise awareness of the upcoming Earthshot Prize, which is set to occur in Mumbai, India, in November. The Earthshot Prize is an initiative launched to encourage innovative solutions for environmental issues affecting the planet.

Around 11:30 AM, the Prince emerged from nearby St. James’s Palace, greeting some of the players before stepping onto the pitch himself. Demonstrating his cricket skills, he bowled a few balls to the legendary West Indies cricketer Brian Lara, showcasing his ability by hitting the ball several times — an unexpected display of talent that caught the attention of both players and onlookers alike.

Following his time on the pitch, Prince William made his way to the St. James’s Park side of the Mall, where he interacted with fans and posed for photographs with tourists lining the iconic road. His engagement with the public illustrated not only his love for the sport but also his commitment to reinforcing ties between the United Kingdom and India.
Cricket holds a significant cultural importance in India, and Tuesday’s event was designed to celebrate the enduring connection between the two nations, united by their shared enthusiasm for the game. The Prince views such events as an opportunity to demonstrate how sports can foster community and togetherness.
This was not the first time the Prince showcased his cricketing prowess in India. During a previous visit ten years ago, he and the Duchess of Cambridge engaged in a similar match in the vibrant city of Mumbai. At that time, the Duchess, dressed in a stunning design by local designer Anita Dongre, captivated spectators as she took her turn at batting, creating lasting memories of their time in India.
For the Earthshot Prize this year, organisers have promised an unprecedented celebration. Scheduled for 18 November, the event will feature notable attendees, including Earthshot Ambassadors Robert Irwin and Nomzamo Mbatha, alongside a guest list of 5,000 people. They will recognise and honour individuals who have made significant contributions to addressing pressing environmental challenges.
Among the expected performers at the prize night is Bridgerton star Simone Ashley, who previously entertained audiences at Windsor Castle during the Earthshot’s fifth anniversary. Indian filmmaker Karan Johar is set to host the prestigious evening, alongside other international celebrities like actors Rami Malek and Alia Bhatt.
Reflecting on this collaboration, Johar shared his enthusiasm for working with Prince William on the Earthshot Prize initiative, describing the Prince’s commitment to combating climate change as “infectious.” He emphasised the significance of having someone with William’s stature passionately advocate for environmental issues, recognising the difference it makes in public discourse around climate action.
William’s affection for India has long been known within royal circles. During their trip in 2016, he revealed the country was a preferred destination for the Duchess, recounting how she expressed her desire to visit India even before they tied the knot in 2011. The couple’s eventual visit, five years into their marriage, underscored the special connection they have to the vibrant culture and diverse landscapes of the subcontinent.
As the Prince of Wales continues to champion environmental causes through initiatives like the Earthshot Prize, events like ‘Cricket On The Mall’ serve to not only highlight significant global issues but also unite fans and sports enthusiasts from different backgrounds in a shared love for cricket. The upcoming prize event in Mumbai promises to further this mission, celebrating innovation and commitment to our planet’s future.
