Thurston, 35, was first diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in February 2025 and later underwent a double mastectomy. Reflecting on her situation, she indicated the emotional toll of her illness, admitting that it has been a year and a half since her diagnosis and pondering when she would no longer have to publicly discuss her health struggles. Her recent update suggests that moment has not yet arrived.

In her Instagram update dated July 13, Thurston stated, “Three months since my double mastectomy will be the day of my liver biopsy,” indicating the ongoing nature of her medical journey. She expressed frustration over her current health standing, saying that her medical team is “at a loss” and unable to determine the cause of her troubling liver enzyme levels. This difficulty led to a suspension of her cancer treatments in hopes that it might provide some clarity or improvement, but unfortunately, it did not.
Earlier in June, Thurston had received encouraging news, with scans indicating “no evidence of disease” in her liver. She expressed cautious optimism, saying, “I can only hope that whatever is possibly left hanging around is stable or shrinking.” However, the recent developments regarding her liver have caused her significant distress. In her post, she openly shared her emotional struggle, stating, “I full-on spiralled over the weekend about it,” highlighting the weight of uncertainty that comes with cancer.
In light of her mental health, Thurston acknowledged that she had started a course of Wellbutrin approximately two months prior and is actively seeking a new therapist. This initiative is part of her commitment to improving her mental well-being during such a challenging period. “Right about now is probably when I start getting emotional and crying on camera,” she quipped, reflecting the juxtaposition of her emotional state with her determination to maintain a sense of humour.
Despite the challenges she faces, Thurston remains hopeful for advancements in medicine and new developments that may shift the perspective on her condition. She mentioned looking forward to “the future of no evidence of disease” and expressed excitement about potential vaccines on the horizon that could be beneficial for patients like herself.
Thurston also shared a glimpse into her personal life, noting that she and her husband, comedian Jeff Acuri, are focusing on renovations at their home. She commented, “When the time comes, I get to just distract myself with all house stuff, so that’ll be nice,” illustrating her desire to find joy in day-to-day moments amidst her health challenges.
Furthermore, she promoted Acuri’s recent Netflix special, ‘Nice to Meet You’, in which she had a humorous cameo. Thurston encouraged her followers to watch it, integrating light-hearted content into her updates, which may help brighten the mood for those following her journey.
In closing her update, Thurston expressed her wish for a time when she would no longer need to share updates about her cancer journey. “I really look forward to the day I don’t have to update you on my cancer stuff,” she shared, indicating her hope for a future where her health struggles are behind her. Her message concluded with a hopeful note, as she stated, “Hopefully [will] get more answers. In the meantime, enjoying life’s moments,” reinforcing her resilience and commitment to living in the present despite her circumstances.
