Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for a pivotal Senate seat in Maine, has withdrawn from the race in light of serious allegations concerning his personal conduct. Platner, an oyster farmer who successfully clinched his party’s nomination last month, announced his decision to step back following a report detailing an alleged sexual assault.

In a video posted on social media platform X on July 8, Platner expressed that, despite vehemently denying the allegations, he decided to suspend his campaign to consider the best course of action for the party. “We’re suspending campaign operations,” he stated, confirming that he would file paperwork to withdraw from the election contest against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.
The controversy intensified after a report from Politico emerged on July 6, wherein Jenny Racicot, a 41-year-old resident of Maine, claimed that Platner had entered her home uninvited while intoxicated and forced her into a sexual encounter against her will in late 2021. During interviews with the publication, Racicot recollected, “I remember him grabbing my pelvis and being really forceful,” adding that the experience left her feeling her autonomy had been stripped away.
