First on the list is Boomer, an endearing 17-year-old Terrier who refuses to let age hinder his spirit. Boomer, despite being under hospice care for a collapsed trachea, approaches each day with an infectious zest for life. His owner affectionately describes him as a “trooper,” emphasising Boomer’s unwavering loyalty and love. Every moment spent together is cherished, as he continually reminds his human companion of the importance of treasuring life’s fleeting moments.

Charlie, a 16-year-old Shichon, has captured hearts with his charming personality and distinctive appearance. The little dog wears UV-protection glasses, a necessity since he is affected by cataracts. This unique accessory not only protects him but has also turned Charlie into a beacon of inspiration for children everywhere. His story has been immortalised in two illustrated children’s books, where he spreads messages of self-acceptance and kindness. Beyond his literary contributions, Charlie enjoys leisurely pursuits, including naps, puzzle-solving, and daily walks.
Pappy, nearly 13 years old and once a victim of an abusive situation in South Carolina, embodies resilience and trust. After years of recovering from her past, Pappy has blossomed into a loving companion who prefers the company of her owner for quiet adventures as opposed to the hustle and bustle of a dog park. Over the past five summers, she has found joy in sailing trips along the picturesque coast of Massachusetts, highlighting how love, patience, and a gentle approach can transform even the most troubled of beginnings into fulfilling journeys.
With their unique stories and the spirit of adventure, these dogs exemplify the notion that age is merely a number. Each finalist has shown that life can be rich and rewarding, regardless of the challenges faced. Their remarkable tales of overcoming health hurdles and embracing life inspire countless others to appreciate the beauty found in every moment.
Individuals keen to demonstrate support for their favourite pooch can participate by casting their votes until Saturday, July 11. The winner, revealed on Monday, July 13, will claim the title of Dog of the Week. Voting is limited to one entry per person per day, as a measure to ensure fairness. Automated or fraudulent votes will not be tolerated and could result in disqualification.
Through this celebration, the uplifting stories of Boomer, Charlie, and Pappy encourage communities to foster deeper connections with their own pets and to recognise the enduring, unconditional love that dogs provide. As the contest unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the vital role our four-legged friends play in our lives, particularly as they age.
As we engage with these heartwarming narratives, we are reminded of the power of resilience and love. The stories of these senior dogs do not just end with their experiences; they invite us to participate in a broader conversation about pet care, ageing with grace, and the joy that can be found in every wag of a tail.
As June 13 approaches, followers of the contest can look forward to discovering which of these beloved dogs will take home the Dog of the Week crown. So, join the celebration and vote to make your voice heard for the senior dog that has captured your heart.
