Their adventure took a concerning turn on Thursday, July 2, when the last signal from their mobile phones was registered near the town of Domegge. As reported by the Italian newspaper, Il Resto del Carlino, limited mobile coverage in the area made it challenging for the couple to seek assistance or provide their exact location, compounding their predicament.

An alarm was raised on Monday, July 6, when Cesaroni, 42, and Pesaresi, 38, failed to report for work. This prompted a large-scale search operation, comprising hundreds of rescuers from various local agencies, including the Alpine Rescue Service, firefighters, and finance police teams. In addition, several helicopters were deployed to comb the rugged terrain, highlighting the urgency of the search effort.

Rescue teams later revealed that the couple became disoriented while navigating the difficult mountain paths. Faced with increasingly hazardous conditions, they decided it would be safer to remain in one spot rather than risk further injury by continuing to attempt navigation. They eventually settled near the ruins of an old hut, where they awaited rescue.
Fortunately, a small stream nearby provided them with a critical water source, enabling their survival until help arrived. It was reported that their mobile phones eventually lost battery power, leaving them without a means of contacting emergency services.
After days of searching, the couple was finally located and airlifted from the mountain site to a nearby rescue base. Thankfully, medical assessments revealed that neither Cesaroni nor Pesaresi had sustained any serious injuries during their ordeal.
In an interview translated by Rai, Cesaroni expressed his feelings of exhaustion combined with immense relief at being found. He highlighted the importance of the stream in their survival, indicating that it not only provided them with water but also instilled a sense of hope that they would be rescued.
Their harrowing experience serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictability of mountain hiking, especially in remote areas where weather and terrain can change drastically. It underlines the importance of proper preparation and awareness of one’s surroundings while outdoors.
