A former principal on the Isle of Wight has faced severe repercussions after it was revealed that she altered the school’s term dates to accommodate a personal cruise. Joy Ballard, the ex-principal of Ryde Academy, has been banned from teaching indefinitely due to her unacceptable professional conduct.

The findings come from a detailed investigation conducted by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA), which outlined multiple breaches of trust and integrity on Ballard’s part. According to the report, she admitted to changing the start and end dates of the fall 2023 and spring 2024 terms, allowing her to set off on a cruise holiday. This self-serving decision required her to miss an entire school day on January 3, 2024, to return from her vacation.

In addition to her manipulation of academic timelines, Ballard reportedly left work early on several occasions for “personal and/or holiday arrangements.” Specific incidents noted include a departure from duty on February 10, 2023, while still being expected to fulfil her responsibilities at the school.

Ballard’s financial misconduct further compounded her troubles. In July 2022, she made a purchase using school funds for a car, ostensibly to save on transportation costs linked to transporting students to alternative provisions. However, she subsequently used the vehicle for unauthorised personal trips, including a holiday in France around Easter 2024.

The panel’s report also revealed other questionable financial decisions made by Ballard. Between April 2021 and October 2022, she authorised expenditures on items that had little practical value for the school, such as a karaoke machine, camping gear, and multiple televisions. The report concluded that her financial management was not only poor but also wasteful of resources that were intended for educational purposes.

The panel expressed its dismay at the “lack of financial planning” demonstrated by Ballard’s actions, emphasising that her behaviour brought the profession into disrepute. Statements included in the report described her conduct as significantly below the standards expected from someone in her position.

Due to the seriousness of her misconduct, the panel has prohibited Ballard from teaching in any capacity across schools, sixth form colleges, youth accommodation, or children’s homes in England. The ruling reflects the panel’s concerns about the implications of her actions on trust in the educational profession.

Despite the severity of her punishments, Ballard expressed no regrets about her actions, asserting her belief that she acted in “the best interests of the pupils.” During her oral testimony, she reportedly remarked, “I am not a rule follower; I like going against the grain to benefit the kids.” This attitude led the panel to conclude that Ballard had seemingly failed to appreciate the broader impact of her decisions.

While she will remain banned from the teaching profession indefinitely, there is an option for Ballard to seek a review of the prohibition order in two years. This aspect of the panel’s decision indicates an understanding that individuals can reflect and learn from their mistakes, although whether this will apply in her case remains to be seen.
