Knife Found Hidden in Passenger’s Prosthetic Leg at Hawaii Airport

In a startling incident at Honolulu International Airport (HNL), an off-duty law enforcement officer made a significant observation that led to the discovery of a concealed weapon in a passenger’s prosthetic leg. According to a press release from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on 19th June, the officer noticed the passenger discreetly placing a folding knife within the heel of their prosthetic limb while going through the security checkpoint.

The alert officer notified TSA officer Rayani Camara, who was on duty at the time. In light of this report, Camara escalated the issue to supervisory TSA officer Michael Bugarin. As the passenger progressed to the advanced imaging technology screening area, the officers advised that extra screening was necessary due to the observed behaviour.

Upon reviewing CCTV footage, officers confirmed their suspicions. The footage revealed the traveller had placed an item onto their prosthetic leg at the divestiture table, where passengers generally place their personal belongings prior to proceeding through the security metal detector.

Typically, passengers at TSA security checkpoints have the option to voluntarily remove prosthetic devices and submit them for X-ray screening. While this is encouraged, according to TSA guidelines, there is no requirement for passengers to remove their prostheses, casts, or other support devices. TSA’s protocols state that these items may be subjected to additional checks, including inspections, use of hand-held metal detectors, and tests for traces of explosives.

In this situation, the passenger elected to have their prosthetic leg screened by X-ray. This procedure unveiled the existence of the folding knife jammed inside the underside of the heel of the leg. Following this alarming discovery, the individual was denied entry to the airport and was escorted away from the security checkpoint.

Nanea Vasta, the federal security director for TSA in Hawaii, commented on the incident, highlighting the importance of situational awareness in ensuring safety within airport environments. She expressed appreciation for the diligence of both Camara and Bugarin in detecting the concealed weapon and acknowledged the role of vigilant passengers in maintaining security standards.

The TSA’s emphasis on alertness is not unwarranted, as it follows a spate of unusual incidents at airports across the country. In May, for instance, a passenger at Indianapolis International Airport attempted to smuggle two live smoke grenades, one of which was hidden inside a jar of peanut butter. This attempt attracted the attention of TSA personnel when alarms were triggered during baggage screening, prompting further inspection by a supervisory officer and an explosives specialist.

Michael Dunphy, an explosives specialist at the TSA, recounted the incident, expressing surprise at the unconventional method of concealment employed by the traveller. He remarked on the initial shock of discovering the second grenade nestled within the peanut butter jar, highlighting the creative yet alarming lengths to which some passengers will go to carry forbidden items.

These incidents serve as salient reminders to both the public and airport security personnel of the ongoing challenges involved in maintaining safety in transit environments.
