A 22-year-old man from Indiana has found himself in legal trouble after an alleged attempt to steal from a Hardee’s fast-food outlet in Evansville. According to a police report, the incident, which took place on 4 July, involved the theft of food items and an audacious attempt to commandeer the restaurant’s cash register.

Brayden Herron is accused of pilfering nearly £40 worth of cups, sauces, and candy after reaching through the drive-thru window. The store’s manager, who wishes to remain anonymous, reported that she observed Herron’s actions on surveillance footage from a nearby gas station. “I saw him open the window, leaning in,” she recounted. “First, he took some cups and sauces, and then he went for the register. That’s when I called the police.”
The manager explained that as she watched the unfolding drama on the security feed, her employee had momentarily left the window to attend to the kitchen, leaving Herron alone at the drive-thru. During the encounter, the suspect reportedly attempted to convince the employee that he had already paid for his order, insisting he wanted a chicken sandwich like the car behind him. However, when the employee informed him that no payment had been received, she shut the window.
Once the window was closed, Herron allegedly reached back in, taking with him several items, including a box of sauces and a bag of candy, totalling approximately $48 in stolen goods. “He was practically hanging into the drive-thru window trying to reach stuff,” the manager noted, adding that her staff member was unaware of the theft until the police arrived.
The position of the security cameras prevented the manager from confirming whether Herron’s attempt to seize the cash register had been successful, but she felt that this had been his intention at some point during the incident. The situation escalated further, leading to a call for police assistance.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers quickly realised that Herron appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Indicators such as slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and a strong smell of alcohol were noted in the police report. Herron reportedly made disjointed comments about having placed an order for a burger and drink, which raised further alarms about his state of mind.
It was during questioning that Herron allegedly admitted to the theft, claiming he was simply “messing around” at the time. His behaviour was evidently erratic, which contributed to the decision to detain him for public intoxication along with the theft charges.
Following the incident, Herron was arrested, taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail, and booked on charges of theft and public intoxication. The initiative from both the manager, who kept a close eye on proceedings via the store’s security, and the responding officers, helped resolve what could have escalated into a more serious crime.
