An 18-year-old marathon runner, Tyler Calleja, is fighting for his life following a dramatic fall from the ninth floor of an apartment building in Surfers Paradise, a suburb of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia. The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 5, shortly after Calleja had set a personal best in a local half-marathon race.

Emergency services received a distress call around 4:30 a.m, when they were alerted to the presence of an unconscious male lying in the car park of the residential building. Upon their arrival, they identified Calleja, who is a promising athlete and a fitness coach. He suffered severe head and abdominal injuries, which required immediate medical attention. Following first aid at the scene, he was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital, where his condition was described as critical.

Investigations carried out by Queensland Police suggested that Calleja had returned to the apartment complex where he was staying and was attempting to gain access when he fell. A spokesperson for the police indicated that the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident are being thoroughly examined by detectives from the Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch, to determine the precise events leading to the fall.
As the news unfolded, it was reported that Calleja’s injury was of a potentially life-threatening nature. Chief Superintendent Kylie Rigg stated during a press briefing that such falls are often tragic. “For him to have survived that is quite remarkable,” she noted, highlighting the severity of injuries typically associated with such accidents.
Calleja had just achieved an impressive milestone just hours before his fall, having logged a personal best in the Gold Coast half-marathon. Earlier this year, he had also undertaken a fundraising challenge for the Queensland Children’s Hospital, motivated by the experience of supporting a friend battling leukaemia. His passion for endurance running had earned him a modest social media following, with nearly 3,000 people tuning in to follow his journey.
In the wake of this distressing incident, the Yeppoon Swans Australian Rules football club, which Calleja represents, launched a fundraiser to assist with his medical expenses. The community’s response has been overwhelming, with donations exceeding $42,000 (approximately AUD 61,000) within a short period. Dan O’Brien, the president of Yeppoon Swans AFC, expressed the club’s shock over the incident and extended thoughts and prayers to Calleja’s family as they navigate this challenging time.
O’Brien stated, “We are deeply shocked by the recent news of the accident involving one of our much-loved Yeppoon Swans players, Tyler Calleja. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family.” This sentiment reflects the strong ties within the sporting community, highlighting how athlete welfare is a collective concern.
He further mentioned that, with the family’s consent, the football club initiated a GoFundMe campaign to rally support for Calleja, reinforcing the club’s commitment to stand by him in his time of need. O’Brien pointed out Calleja’s willingness to help others in the community, underlining the importance of collective support during such crises.
As the investigation continues, the Calleja family has requested privacy while they focus on their son’s recovery. The football club and the wider community have shown tremendous solidarity, hoping for the best outcome for the young athlete whose spirit and determination have inspired many.
Despite the complexities surrounding the incident, the unified response from the community serves as a poignant reminder of the strength found in support and empathy during moments of crisis. The hopes and prayers of many now rest firmly with Tyler Calleja as he battles through his injuries.
