Serena Williams, the celebrated 23-time Grand Slam champion, has officially withdrawn from her much-anticipated doubles match at Wimbledon, where she was set to reunite with her sister, Venus Williams. The announcement, made via an Instagram post on 4 July, follows a knee injury that Serena sustained during her first-round singles match on 30 June.

The sisters were scheduled to face off against the unseeded South American duo of Camila Osorio and Solana Sierra in what would have marked a significant moment for tennis fans. However, due to her worsening condition, Serena announced she would not be able to participate in the match.
“I’m heartbroken to have to withdraw from doubles,” Serena expressed in her post. She elaborated on how much the chance to compete alongside her sister meant to her, especially after her long hiatus from the sport. Serena highlighted her efforts to prepare for the match, remarking on the disappointment of still not being ready to compete.
In her candid Instagram update, the 44-year-old star shared a video that illustrated her struggles as she attempted to walk, in addition to photos showcasing the treatment she has been receiving for her knee. She noted, “The photo of the syringes shows the fluid they drained from my knee after my singles match… yikes.” Furthermore, she discussed the positive and negative aspects of her condition, stating that while the swelling in her knee shouldn’t return, she did not manage to recover sufficiently in time for the match.
Serena’s injury was sustained during her first-round loss to Maya Joint, who is currently ranked 53rd in the world. Initially, the performance was expected to mark a triumphant return for Serena, who had made her comeback only a month earlier at the Queen’s Club in London, after nearly four years away from professional competition. Unfortunately, that tournament had its own share of disappointments, as she and her doubles partner, Victoria Mboko, were forced to withdraw due to an injury sustained by Mboko.
The Wimbledon Championships, which run from 29 June to 12 July, feature a women’s doubles draw that incorporates 128 players. The Williams sisters have a storied history at the prestigious tournament, having secured the doubles title together six times, while Serena has claimed seven singles titles and Venus five.
Tournament director Jamie Baker expressed his support for the champion, acknowledging the unfortunate circumstances surrounding her withdrawal. Many fans will undoubtedly share Serena’s disappointment at not being able to witness the iconic sisters play together.
As she concluded her post, Serena expressed her appreciation for the undeniable support she has received from her fans throughout this challenging period. “Thank you to the fans for your incredible support and for making this comeback so meaningful… All I can say is stay tuned to a city near you,” she noted, hinting at her future aspirations and potential events.
As Wimbledon unfolds, all eyes will remain on the health and recovery of both Serena and Venus Williams, as well as how the tournament continues without the presence of one of its most legendary athletes. Their contributions to the sport have left an indelible mark, and many will be hopeful for both sisters’ future appearances in competitions to come.
