A Texas family is grappling with loss as they approach the one-year anniversary of a devastating flood that claimed the life of a beloved mother, wife, and educator. Brian Eads, who shared three decades with his late wife, Katheryn Eads, recalls the profound impact of her untimely death following the catastrophic flooding on July 4, 2025.

Katheryn, a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio, was a central figure in her family. Brian, now 53 and residing in Cibolo, Texas, recounted how Katheryn was the anchor of their household, leaving behind not only him but two daughters, Victoria and Rachel, and a grandson. “She believed that family was everything,” he said, reflecting on her enduring relationships with her immediate and extended family.

Described as determined and driven, Katheryn earned her Ph.D. in psychology while being a devoted mother and a supportive military spouse during Brian’s two decades in the Navy. “When she set her mind to something, that’s what she was going to do,” Brian noted, showcasing her resilience and commitment to personal and familial growth.
On the fateful day of the tragedy, Brian and Katheryn had decided to camp in an RV in Kerr County for the Fourth of July weekend. Although Brian initially dismissed the severity of a thunderstorm and flash flooding, they soon found themselves in peril as the situation escalated. “It was just one of those things that was meant to be,” he reflected on their relationship, crediting Katheryn for encouraging him to stay in the Navy longer than intended.
As the floodwaters rose, Brian woke Katheryn and urgently urged her to evacuate. Tragically, while making their escape, Katheryn lost her footing in the rushing water. A fellow camper attempted to help them by providing a ride in the bed of his truck but soon became immobilised as the floodwaters overwhelmed the vehicle.
In a harrowing turn of events, the couple became separated amidst the chaos. Brian recalls desperately calling out to Katheryn, instructing her to find something to hold onto, only to be struck by debris that momentarily knocked him unconscious. His training as a divemaster proved invaluable as he managed to swim to safety by climbing a nearby tree, where he waited for rescue.
Once he was safe, Brian was informed that Katheryn’s body had been discovered downstream. “She was right down about a quarter of a mile from where I was,” he shared, his voice heavy with sorrow. This revelation marked the beginning of an arduous journey for Brian and their daughters as they adjusted to life without her.
Katheryn’s impact stretched far beyond her family; she was dedicated to her students and her work in the foster care system. Brian recounted her joy upon witnessing her students graduate and succeed, which left a lasting impression on those whose lives she influenced. Her daughter Victoria poignantly expressed their family’s grief, noting that they never anticipated having to navigate life without their mother.
In the months following the tragedy, Brian faced the difficult decision to sell their family home, a place filled with memories of their shared life. He had intended to retire as an aircraft mechanic in the next few years, but the loss of Katheryn led him to reassess his path. Now, travelling the country in an RV, he finds solace in exploring places he had not visited during his military service.
Though Brian still experiences flashbacks during thunderstorms, he remains resolute in honouring Katheryn’s memory. “You’ve got to face your fears, and don’t let it stop you,” he recalls her saying, emphasising her desire for him to embrace life. “After 30 years of being together, all of a sudden you’re on your own,” he said, underscoring the profound void left in his life.
As Brian travels, he carries Katheryn’s spirit with him, determined to live fully in a manner she would have wanted. Her legacy as an unwavering supporter of family and education remains a guiding light for him and their daughters, reminding them of the love and joy they shared in the time they had together.
