An Arizona man has been arrested on charges relating to the severe neglect of his disabled son, following a shocking incident that raised serious concerns about the welfare of vulnerable adults. Fifty-two-year-old Melvin Shimkus is accused of leaving his 31-year-old son, Hunter Shimkus, unattended in a bathtub for an extended period, reportedly for seven weeks.

The case came to light when officers from the Mesa Police Department responded to a call late on the evening of June 29. They discovered Hunter in a bathroom in deeply distressing conditions, with reports indicating he was in an emaciated state bearing “oozing sores” across his body. The injuries included a leg bent at an unnatural angle, and police noted an overwhelming smell of excrement and decay upon entering the bathroom.

In documents released by local news outlets, it was described how Hunter suffers from a nerve disease that impairs both his mobility and fine motor skills. Prosecutors highlighted the extreme level of neglect, stating that the situation led to significant injuries that could be permanent for the victim. “He clearly suffered from severe, severe neglect,” a prosecutor noted, further characterising the neglect as being of such a magnitude that it raised alarms regarding Hunter’s long-term health.

Upon questioning by police, Melvin Shimkus asserted that he had been caring for his son over the past year and claimed to have placed Hunter in the bathtub just a week prior to the officers’ arrival. He recounted checking on his son later that same day only to find him in the alarming condition described. Melvin also claimed to have offered Hunter medical assistance, but indicated that the 31-year-old refused the help on multiple occasions.
Family members have since come forward, corroborating that efforts had been made to encourage Hunter to seek medical help. An aunt of Hunter’s, Carol Scofield, recounted how relatives had tried numerous times to persuade him to go to hospital. However, according to her testimony, Hunter expressed a steadfast refusal, even when paramedics were summoned. They ultimately declined to intervene, citing that Hunter was an adult who could make his own decisions.
Court documents outline that Hunter had reportedly been in the bathtub since May 16, the last known date any authorities were contacted regarding his care. This prolonged period of neglect has prompted outrage and concern among the community and beyond.
Melvin Shimkus appeared in court for the first time on June 30, where he was formally charged with vulnerable adult abuse. He has since been taken into custody, with bail set at $12,000. As the investigation unfolds, questions continue to arise regarding the responsibilities of caregivers and the measures in place to protect vulnerable individuals from such distressing situations.
The Mesa Police Department and the City of Mesa City Attorney’s Office have been approached for further comment as this troubling case develops. The local community is left grappling with the implications of this incident, emphasising the need for greater vigilance and support for individuals like Hunter who may be enduring similar situations of deprivation and neglect.
