The emergency unfolded on a Tuesday afternoon when a water main break led to heavy downpours, resulting in flash flooding. This caused the road to give way, leaving a vehicle stranded at the mercy of the sinkhole. Officer Antwon “AJ” Stevenson of the Norfolk Police Department was among the first responders to arrive at the scene, instinctively diving into the water to rescue the trapped driver.
Brennan Feldman, who was driving in the area during the storm, witnessed the situation unfold when he saw the woman, still inside her car, screaming for assistance. “I slowly drove past, and there she was, sitting in the car,” he recounted. Without hesitation, he decided to stop and offer help.
Feldman described the tense moment when Stevenson leapt into the sinkhole that had formed around the vehicle. “He jumped into the sinkhole, going into water about chest-deep. I held onto his belt to keep him secure,” Feldman stated, showing the collaborative effort between citizens and the police officer. With help from other onlookers, they managed to assist Stevenson in safely extricating the woman from her car.
