‘Heroic’ Man Ran into Burning Home and Saved 2 Girls from Fire That Left One Child Dead

A Texas man has been hailed as a hero for his courageous actions in saving two young girls from a house fire in Fort Worth earlier this month. Leon Segura, whose quick thinking has drawn widespread praise from the community and officials alike, entered the burning building before firefighters arrived, managing to rescue the children from a perilous situation.

The incident took place around 3 a.m. on Saturday, June 27, in the 4200 block of McCart Avenue, when emergency dispatchers received multiple reports regarding a fire with people potentially trapped inside. As flames and smoke engulfed the home, Segura happened upon the scene and did not hesitate to act.

Witnessing one of the children standing on the porch and crying out for help, Segura jumped into action. “I had the windows down and heard some screaming, so I really quickly just jumped out of the truck,” he recounted. Initially, he struggled to gain entry, finding the front door sealed due to the heat and flames. Undeterred, he punched through a glass door, wrapping a bandana around his face for protection against smoke and heat.

Once inside, Segura discovered two girls unconscious in the living room. Despite the perilous conditions, he swiftly carried one outside and returned for the other. “It was really bad in there,” he described. “As soon as I grabbed the last child, I put her over my shoulders, and that’s when the back of the house started booming and banging,” signalling the imminent danger of an explosion.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes, approximately four minutes after dispatch. They immediately initiated lifesaving measures, airlifting the rescued girls to a nearby burn unit where they were reported to be in critical condition. Another child, who was also pulled from the house by firefighters, was taken to a local hospital, while a fourth was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The Fort Worth Fire Department later confirmed that the house was home to seven occupants at the time of the blaze, including two adults and five children. One child was reported to have escaped without injury, while the adults received treatment for their injuries.

The fire department expressed profound gratitude to Segura for his bravery and selflessness. “Because of this man’s heroic actions and his willingness to run into danger without concern for his own safety, he gave two girls a chance at survival. He himself suffered multiple lacerations and burns,” they stated. His actions have been described as “extraordinary” by officials.

As local community members began to rally around Segura, the fire department also emphasised the importance of fire safety. They urged residents to ensure their homes are equipped with functioning smoke alarms, especially in light of this tragic incident.
