In a recent episode of PEOPLE’s “WAG World” series, Dr. Mindy Armstead announced that she and her husband, Arik Armstead, a player for the Jacksonville Jaguars, are set to welcome their fourth child. The couple has three children already and are looking forward to expanding their family further.
Dr. Mindy, a dual-boarded psychiatrist, reminisced about her budding romance with Arik, which started during her hectic medical school days. In a candid discussion with WAG World host Skyler Caruso, she shared how they began communicating despite being situated on opposite coasts. While Dr. Mindy was studying in Buffalo, New York, Arik was focused on his career with the San Francisco 49ers, having been drafted 17th overall in 2015.
Reflecting on how their relationship evolved, Dr. Mindy described the amusing beginning as somewhat embarrassing. “I’m five years older than him, so I was in med school while he was in his first year in the NFL,” she recounted. A mutual friend played a pivotal role in connecting them, revealing that the NFL rookie had slid into her DMs, encouraging her to respond.
Although initially sceptical about the potential for a relationship given their differing life stages, Dr. Mindy noted that there was an underlying optimism. “He’s helped me be a little more of a dreamer, but I’m definitely a realist,” she told Caruso, explaining that she had never envisioned herself dating an NFL player. The challenging logistics of long-distance dating weighed heavily on her mind, as she managed a packed med school schedule, which included working multiple shifts each month.
Eventually, the couple’s paths crossed in Los Angeles during a birthday celebration for Dr. Mindy. Coincidentally, Arik was also in town as the 49ers had a long weekend, allowing them to meet. “He ended up taking us to dinner two nights in a row!” she recalled, describing the initial connection they made. During their dinners, she appreciated his calm demeanour and found it refreshing to see his true personality.
The timing of their encounters proved fortuitous; shortly after their LA meet-up, the 49ers were scheduled to play against the Buffalo Bills – an event that occurs only once every decade. Dr. Mindy welcomed Arik to Buffalo, sharing local hotspots such as Niagara Falls and the famed Duff’s wings, which marked a significant moment in their relationship.
Following this serendipitous meeting, the couple became inseparable, facing various challenges together, including the realities of long-distance dating and demanding schedules. Dr. Mindy admitted there were moments of uncertainty, often wondering if the relationship would endure. However, she later realised that Arik’s steady presence dispelled many of her worries. “I guess I had in my mind this stereotype of what I thought a football player was going to be like… and he’s really nothing like that,” she reflected.
The couple tied the knot in June 2020 and soon welcomed their first child, daughters Amiri and Ayla, followed by their son, Audemar Kristian. Dr. Mindy expressed excitement about the impending arrival of their fourth child, stating, “We’ve got one on the way! We’re really excited. We love a big family.” Coming from larger families—Mindy is one of five siblings, while Arik is one of four—she shared how their growing family feels like a natural step, even if it was not initially planned.
As they prepare for this new chapter in their lives, the Armsteads look forward to the joys and adventures of raising a family together, with Dr. Mindy emphasising their shared values and commitment to family life.
