In a poignant exploration of grief and activism, South Carolina State Representative Brandon Guffey has unveiled his new book, “Tomorrow Needs You: A Father’s Journey Turning Pain into Purpose.” This publication chronicles his relentless efforts to combat sextortion following the tragic death of his son, Gavin Guffey, who fell victim to an online scam.

Gavin, a 17-year-old recent high school graduate from Rock Hill, South Carolina, began conversing with a woman he encountered on Instagram Messenger during the summer of 2022. The exchanges quickly became flirtatious, leading Gavin to share compromising images, which unfortunately opened the door to a horrific scam. The individual behind the profile, identified as Hassanbunhussein Abolore Lawal, a Nigerian national, demanded financial compensation in exchange for not disclosing the pictures. After being informed that his initial attempt to send $50 was insufficient, Gavin, overwhelmed by despair, tragically took his own life on July 27, 2022.
This devastating loss served as a catalyst for Guffey, who vowed to take action not only for his son but also for other vulnerable children facing similar threats. In the wake of Gavin’s death, he transformed his grief into purpose by entering politics and advocating for stricter measures to protect minors from online predators. His mission has resonated far beyond his local community, gaining national attention as he tackled the pervasive issue of sextortion.

Between October 2021 and March 2023, over 13,000 financial sextortion complaints were reported to federal authorities, predominantly involving minors. Disturbingly, at least 14 of these victims died by suicide during that period, as reported by the FBI. In response to this alarming trend, Guffey worked tirelessly to raise awareness and implement changes in state legislation. His efforts culminated in the passage of “Gavin’s Law,” a significant piece of legislation that makes sexual extortion a felony in South Carolina. It also mandates educational initiatives within school districts to inform students about the perils of sextortion.
Guffey’s book, which debuted on October 27, details not only his son’s life and aspirations but also the mental health struggles he faced in the aftermath of their loss. The memoir serves as a guide for parents, offering insights into how they can better protect their children in the digital age. Guffey emphasised the need for conversations around these topics, stating his hope that parents would engage with their children more proactively regarding online safety.
Pursuing justice for Gavin has also involved assisting the FBI in apprehending Lawal, who has since been extradited to the United States and is facing serious federal charges, including child exploitation leading to death. Lawal currently awaits trial and could face a life sentence if convicted.

In a further testament to his commitment, Guffey took his advocacy efforts to Washington, D.C., where he testified before Congress in February 2025. He called for stricter regulations on Big Tech companies, comparing their impact on youth to that of Big Tobacco. By gaining attention at the national level, Guffey hopes to spur legislative changes that would better safeguard children from online exploitation.
Guffey was invited to the White House on May 19, 2025, to witness the signing of the “Take It Down Act,” legislation he credits in part to the influence of Gavin’s Law. This new federal law criminalises the sharing or threatening to share intimate images without consent, whether real or fabricated, adding another layer of protection for minors.
In “Tomorrow Needs You,” Guffey shares not only the harrowing reality of his experiences but also messages of resilience and the importance of compassion. He reflects on how societal stigma can heighten feelings of isolation and despair in young individuals, driving them to tragic decisions. Through his narrative, he hopes to foster a culture of support, urging adults to lead by example and demonstrate grace to those facing difficulties.
Ultimately, Brandon Guffey’s journey illustrates the profound impact of personal tragedy on public advocacy. His tireless efforts not only honour his son’s memory but also aim to change the narrative surrounding online safety for countless other youths. As he continues to fight for those who have suffered similar losses, Guffey embodies the spirit of resilience, urging all to remember that tomorrow indeed needs them.
