Plainville, Massachusetts – In June 2023, Sean Simmer, a 46-year-old business executive, experienced a life-altering event that began as a simple ride through the woods. Simmer, who was riding his Yamaha Viking side-by-side vehicle with his fiancée, Chanya, and their pit bull, Pepper, had no idea that his routine excursion would turn into a near-death experience.
Simmer, who lives just outside Plainville, enjoys taking Pepper out on the expansive trails behind his home for exercise. During one such outing, he encountered a fallen cedar tree obstructing the path. With no chainsaw to clear it, Simmer noted the hazard, describing it as a “widow-maker.” That evening, he had what he thought was a haunting nightmare involving his nephew and the very tree that had obstructed their path.

Two weeks later, on June 16, fate took a tragic turn. Simmer invited his 13-year-old nephew, Mack Slowey, and his friend, Andrew Buchanan, to join him on another ride. Tragically, they encountered the same tree blocking their path again. As Simmer attempted to manoeuvre over it, the tree impaled him, forcing its way through his left leg, right pelvis, and exiting through his back.

“I immediately went into shock,” Simmer recounted. Despite the severity of the situation, he instinctively shifted into caretaker mode, focusing on remaining calm for the sake of his nephew and his friend. He instructed them to call for emergency assistance while he centred himself, picturing his loved ones as he awaited help.
It took first responders approximately 45 minutes to arrive and extricate him from the tree, an operation that proved to be as arduous as it was extraordinary. Simmer was airlifted to a hospital shortly after, where doctors were confronted with a highly complex set of injuries, having miraculously avoided all major organs except for a nick to his colon.
During his 38-day hospital stay, Simmer underwent eight surgeries and grappled with a serious staph infection known as MRSA, which further complicated his recovery. The lengthy rehabilitation not only challenged him physically but also transformed his perspective on life. Previously engrossed in a high-pressure career as Vice President of Operations at UFP Industries, Simmer found himself confronted with profound moments of introspection.
“The only thing I could think of was staying alive,” he said. He discovered a new appreciation for life’s simple joys, from colouring books to puzzles, which helped him navigate this challenging phase.
As he healed, Simmer grew closer to the hospital staff who cared for him. He took the time to learn the names of every nurse and support worker, even hosting pizza parties for the staff as a gesture of gratitude. “I can never thank them enough,” he reflected, acknowledging the integral role they played in his recovery.
Simmer shared that his accident forced him to confront the choice of self-pity against the backdrop of profound gratitude. “There are two paths you can choose when life challenges you; you can wallow as a victim or choose to appreciate your life and those who work tirelessly to keep you alive,” he explained.
While his recovery journey was not immune to dark moments of despair, Simmer found solace in the stories of others facing even graver circumstances. Observing the strength of fellow patients inspired him to shift his perspective on the value of life.
Now, three years after that harrowing day, Simmer has resumed his career and continues to cherish every moment with his children. He has made it a point to celebrate the gift of life – emphasising the importance of connection and gratitude.
As he reflects on this transformative journey, Simmer advocates for a life of appreciation. “We often take things for granted. Remember to cherish every breath and every moment,” he urged. He reiterated his gratitude to all those who played a role in his recovery, underscoring the significance of community and compassion.
“With life capable of changing in an instant, we should strive to help others as much as we can,” Simmer concluded. His story serves as a poignant reminder of resilience, gratitude, and the unbreakable human spirit.
