California Firefighters Revive 4 Cats Found Unconscious with ‘Mouth-to-Snout’ CPR After Apartment Fire

Four cats are on the mend following a dramatic rescue by firefighters from a smoke-filled apartment in Riverside County, California. The animals were successfully revived after being trapped in a blaze that damaged the building, showcasing the vital role that quick action and specialised equipment can play in such emergency scenarios.

The incident began when firefighters extinguished the flames of an apartment fire. As they prepared to leave the scene, a neighbour alerted the crew to the presence of several pets still inside the building. Firefighters, including Dave Colombo and Ray Guillen, promptly re-entered the smoke-filled rooms to search for the animals.

Upon their return, the firefighters discovered four cats hiding beneath a bed. Sadly, the cats were in distress and unresponsive due to severe smoke inhalation. Guillen described the alarming moment he picked one of the animals up, recalling, “As soon as I grabbed it, it fell over. You could tell it was in bad shape.”

Realising the gravity of the situation, the firefighters immediately removed the cats from the apartment and brought them outside. There, Captain Mark Lewan and his team commenced life-saving measures on the grass next to their fire engine. They employed CPR, oxygen administration, and other crucial emergency procedures tailored to the needs of the felines.

Video footage released by the Riverside County Fire Department showed the intensive efforts of the crew as they worked to revive the cats. Using specially designed masks to provide oxygen, the firefighters performed CPR techniques akin to those used for infants. Captain Lewan even resorted to a procedure known as ‘mouth-to-snout’ resuscitation, hoping to stimulate one of the cats into breathing normally once again.

The efforts of the fire crew were met with success, as all four cats regained consciousness and emerged from the ordeal with their lives intact. Following the rescue, the animals were swiftly reunited with their owner, bringing a sense of relief after an extremely distressing experience.

Fortunately, there were no additional injuries reported from the incident. This rescue highlights a crucial point: while pets may endure the heat of flames, the danger posed by smoke inhalation is considerable and can quickly escalate into a life-threatening situation for animals trapped indoors.

Fire officials emphasised the importance of having access to specialised equipment, such as pet oxygen masks, which can significantly enhance the chances of survival for pets in emergencies.
