Singing the national anthem during the festival, which runs from June 25 to July 10, Wilkins expressed her dedication to her craft through social media. She defended her reputation against detractors who accused her of leveraging her relationship with Trump to secure a position at the event. “Let’s just get a few things straight, because this is long overdue,” she stressed, pointing out that her achievements in the country music industry were the result of her own efforts, and not merely a consequence of her association with Trump or his former administration.
The announcement concerning the Great American State Fair has seen a significant shift in its lineup, with notable performers like Martina McBride and Bret Michaels pulling out after learning about Trump’s role. In November 2025, Patel faced backlash for allegedly employing SWAT team members for Wilkins’ security, an action labelled by some as an abuse of power.
Despite the outcry, Wilkins asserted she has never sought to exploit her connections. “I’m no longer accepting false narratives and total sham accusations that diminish my hard work and earned accomplishments,” she stated firmly on X, further underlining her message of empowerment and resilience in the face of criticism.

The New York Times reported that one of its reporters, Elizabeth Williamson, was investigated by the FBI following articles written about Wilkins. The newspaper’s executive editor decried the investigation, claiming it represented an infringement upon Williamson’s First Amendment rights to report freely.
The FBI later clarified that their interest in Williamson was part of an investigation into a death threat made against Wilkins that specifically referenced the journalist’s work, reiterating that their actions were well within legal boundaries and protocols.
