A New York couple has been sentenced to prison in connection with the tragic death of their three-year-old daughter, Joycelynn Dylewski, after authorities determined she succumbed to severe neglect. Matthew and Samantha Dylewski entered guilty pleas to charges of criminally negligent homicide related to Joycelynn’s death, which occurred in 2025. Both were given the maximum penalty of 16 months to four years in state prison.

The investigation into Joycelynn’s death began when the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distress call at the family home in Corinth last February. Reports indicate that the child was found unresponsive and struggling to breathe. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities disclosed that she had untreated lice, severely matted hair, and was living in unsanitary environments, contributing to her tragic passing.

Joycelynn’s health issues were alarming; investigators revealed that she had a significant lice infestation that had gone unaddressed for extended periods, leading to complications such as anaemia. Additionally, reports indicated severe dental decay and the absence of any medical care during the ten months leading up to her death. Notably, toxicology tests detected clonidine in her system, a medication she had not been prescribed.

In a courtroom session, the judge condemned the living conditions described during the case as “deplorable and unsuitable for any child to be living in.” The Dylewiskis were initially charged with several counts of endangering a child’s welfare, though those charges were eventually dropped.

On the day of the sentencing, Matthew Dylewski shared his thoughts in court, expressing a profound sense of loss. “I wish it was me that died to this day,” he stated, as reported by CBS 6. The presiding judge took the opportunity to address the gravity of the parents’ responsibilities, stating, “Your entire job, and it’s a gift to have a child, was to keep her safe.”
