A Texas couple, Kayleen and Jeremy Morrow, are redefining family travel by embracing the thrills and challenges that come with flying privately. Jeremy Morrow earned his pilot’s licence in August 2023, a long-held ambition that he first articulated during a date with Kayleen a decade ago. “On our very first date in 2013, he told me that one day he would have a plane,” Kayleen reminisces. Initially taken aback by the enormity of the aspiration, she later found herself drawn into the world of aviation as Jeremy diligently pursued his dream. “I thought I was simply along for the ride, but somewhere between take-offs and landings, it became my dream too,” she shared.
However, the journey to feeling comfortable flying with their young children and pets was gradual. Kayleen admits that her initial boarding of the family plane—a Cessna 172, a popular beginner aircraft—was characterised by apprehension. As Jeremy focused on safety training and perfected his flying skills, her confidence grew. “It took me a long time to be comfortable flying with our son,” she explained, highlighting the methodical approach Jeremy adopted towards aviation safety.
Today, flying has become routine for the Morrow family. Following the acquisition of a Cessna 210, they have explored numerous destinations throughout the United States, including a significant trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, and quick day excursions to places in Texas such as Fredericksburg and Amarillo. Kayleen notes, “We can take quick, spontaneous trips and be back home before lunch.” This freedom allows the family to create cherished memories that would otherwise be hard to fit into their busy schedule.
For their eldest child, flying has transformed from an unsettling experience to an exciting venture. “Now, my son is so used to it he begs us to go flying and loves to just go with my husband to the airplane tower and watch planes,” Kayleen said, reflecting on her son’s new enthusiasm for aviation, which includes themed birthday parties.
Despite their enjoyment, Kayleen acknowledges the hesitations some feel regarding air travel with small children. To address these concerns, Jeremy has implemented robust safety protocols; he strictly adheres to limits regarding weather conditions that could compromise safety, such as wind, thunderstorms, and rain. Kayleen emphasises these precautions: “[My husband] has set personal limitations, and we do not fly if the weather is outside of his limitations.” This rigorous mindset has occasionally led to last-minute plan alterations, but the couple prioritises safety above convenience.
Before every flight, Jeremy conducts a thorough pre-flight inspection, a routine that Kayleen ensures is followed consistently. “The children and I always wait in the car while he does this so that there are no distractions,” she explained, reinforcing the discipline that governs their aviation practices. Each take-off begins the same way, with systematic checklists designed to ensure all parameters are satisfied, a standard that puts the family’s safety at the forefront.
While social media commentators have labelled the couple as “crazy” for flying with young children, Kayleen finds reassurance in the meticulous planning and safety measures accompanying their flights. “There are always safety concerns with anything that you do in life. Driving a car is a safety concern,” she remarked, drawing parallels to other forms of travel that are often taken for granted. Acknowledging the rigorous training Jeremy undertakes to maintain his skills and certifications, Kayleen expresses a deep trust in her husband’s capabilities.

Kayleen reflects, “What I didn’t realise then was that this dream would become one of the greatest gifts to our family.
