Tragic circumstances have enveloped the life of Australian wellness influencer Stacey Warnecke, who tragically passed away shortly after giving birth at her home on September 29, 2025. Warnecke, known for her advocacy of a toxin-free lifestyle, pursued a natural childbirth approach, ultimately opting for what is known as a “freebirth,” a practice that involves delivering a baby without the presence of medical professionals.

Stacey welcomed her son, Axel, to the world in the early hours of the morning, but complications soon arose following the delivery. Reports indicate that she experienced severe postpartum bleeding, a condition known as postpartum haemorrhage, which can be life-threatening if not addressed swiftly. In a heartbreaking turn, Stacey initially resisted calls for medical assistance from her husband, Nathan Warnecke, and her doula, Emily Lal.
Nathan Warnecke took to Instagram nearly three weeks after the tragedy to share his devastation. “It’s with a heavy heart that I share with you the unexpected passing of my beautiful wife, soul mate and best friend,” he wrote. He explained that an “unforeseen and extremely rare complication” arose after Stacey was transferred to the hospital, despite the valiant efforts of the healthcare staff.

Stacey’s decision to forgo medical guidance during her pregnancy stemmed from her distrust of the healthcare system, a sentiment that reportedly grew stronger after the COVID-19 vaccine mandates. During a coroner’s hearing in December 2025, it was revealed that she declined routine prenatal screenings, including ultrasounds, which many health professionals consider crucial for monitoring maternal and foetal health.

Her preference for a “freebirth” was driven by a desire for autonomy and a belief in avoiding what she perceived as unnecessary medical interventions. Nathan expressed in court that Stacey had “a strong view about the cascade of interventions that can occur within a hospital environment,” which influenced her choice for an entirely unassisted birth.
The birth proceeded without immediate complications until the processes of delivery and postpartum began to take a dire turn. Lal, who attended the birth, recounted that Stacey declined assistance even when her condition seemed to be worsening. Lal testified that Stacey’s autonomy was a fundamental part of her approach, stating, “There was no way I was going to call an ambulance against her wishes.”
Eventually, as Stacey’s health deteriorated, both Nathan and Lal insisted on seeking emergency help, which she reluctantly agreed to. However, by the time paramedics arrived, Stacey was in critical condition and had suffered significant blood loss. Upon arriving at Frankston Hospital, she underwent emergency procedures, including a hysterectomy, in a desperate bid to save her life. Unfortunately, despite the medical intervention, Stacey suffered multiple cardiac arrests and was pronounced dead later that day.
Following the tragic incident, Emily Lal faced scrutiny regarding her qualifications and the appropriateness of her role during the birth. It was revealed that Lal, who had marketed her services as “The Authentic Birth Keeper,” lacked formal clinical training and perceived her role merely as that of a supportive friend. A subsequent investigation into her practice led to her being barred from offering health-related services in the aftermath of Stacey’s death.
In honour of Stacey’s memory, a GoFundMe campaign was initiated to support Nathan and baby Axel, raising over $88,000 AUD to assist with funeral costs and to provide a future for the grieving family. Updates shared on the campaign highlighted Nathan’s struggles to adapt to life with a newborn while processing his overwhelming loss, although they also communicated positive news about Axel’s growth and well-being.
While Stacey’s choice for a freebirth underscores a personal philosophy rooted in autonomy and natural living, her tragic death serves as a cautionary tale in the ongoing debate regarding the safety of unassisted childbirth. Many medical organisations continue to advocate for births attended by qualified healthcare professionals, noting the unpredictable nature of childbirth and the potential for serious complications.
As the community around Stacey mourns her untimely loss, conversations about the complexities of childbirth, personal choices, and the need for medical support resonate more profoundly than ever. In the wake of this tragedy, the importance of accessible and trustworthy healthcare cannot be overstated, as families seek the best outcomes in one of life’s most critical events.
