Este Haim, the talented musician known for her work with the band Haim, recently opened up about the challenges she faces living with type 1 diabetes during a panel discussion at the Tribeca Festival in New York City. The singer, 40, revealed the ongoing struggles of managing her condition, stating, “It’s not fun.” Haim expressed the weight of her daily routine, explaining that as a diabetic, she confronts at least 200 microdecisions each day. These decisions revolve around her diet, insulin administration, and the constant need to monitor her blood sugar levels. Reflecting on this burden, Haim remarked, “I really struggle with this part of my life.” Despite enjoying a fulfilling career alongside her sisters Alana and Danielle, she admitted that managing diabetes remains a significant challenge.

Haim’s struggles with diabetes particularly intensify when performing on stage. She recounted some harrowing experiences, noting that there have been occasions when her blood sugar levels dipped so low that she lost consciousness while performing. “There have been times on stage where my blood sugar has gotten so low that I pass out,” she shared, highlighting the dangers of exerting herself during live performances without proper fuel.
An example of one such incident occurred during the band’s debut at the iconic Glastonbury Festival in 2013. Haim explained that she had taken insulin prior to the performance but forgotten to eat. This oversight led to a dramatic moment when she began to feel the onset of a seizure while on stage. In a moment of vulnerability, she had to leave the performance briefly before collapsing. Fortunately, her sisters and manager were prepared; they always kept fudge on hand to raise her blood sugar quickly. “They start shaking me. They put fudge in my mouth, literally,” Haim recalled, laughing at the absurdity of the situation.
Despite the seriousness of her condition, Haim acknowledged the positive aspects that have emerged from her experience with diabetes. She stated, “It gave me empathy. Meeting other diabetics in the world has brought me community.” This sense of community has been crucial in her journey, and she optimistically expressed hope for a future cure, stating, “I think that one day we’ll find a cure, but until then we’re just going to keep on keeping on.”
Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a child, Haim’s journey to understanding her condition was somewhat serendipitous. She learned about autoimmune diseases in school and recognised her own symptoms, prompting her decision to see a doctor for a blood sugar test. “So I weirdly diagnosed myself beforehand. It was very crazy,” she reflected on her diagnosis process.
Her experience with diabetes has impacted her personal relationships as well. Haim previously shared the emotional toll of having a partner who ended their relationship due to fears about their potential children inheriting the disease. She recounted, “I had a guy break up with me because I said that there was a possibility that our kid would have diabetes. He was like, ‘Then why are we here?’ And I was like, ‘What?!’”
It is clear that Este Haim has navigated her share of difficulties associated with type 1 diabetes, but her resilience and candidness serve as an inspiration to many. She regularly offers insights into managing her diabetes, emphasising the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. “The trick is to stay as healthy as possible,” she advised, acknowledging the frustrations that often accompany her condition. “There are times when I think, ‘Why do I have to put up with this and nobody else has to deal with it?’ But it has become part of my life now.”
As Haim continues to navigate her music career and her health, the support of her family and community will undoubtedly play a crucial role in her ongoing journey. With her honest reflections, she not only sheds light on the realities of living with a chronic condition but also embodies the spirit of resilience and hope for those who face similar challenges.
