Venus and Serena Williams are set to reignite their iconic partnership on the grass courts of Wimbledon this year, following the announcement of their wildcard entry into the women’s doubles event. This doubles reunion marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time since 2016 that the legendary sisters will compete together in this prestigious tournament.

The All England Club confirmed the news through a post on their official Instagram account, capturing the excitement surrounding their return with a photo of the Williams sisters on court. The caption underscored the anticipation: “Back together, at Wimbledon.” This thrilling development adds another chapter to their storied legacy, which includes six Wimbledon doubles titles, their first triumph dating back to the year 2000.

Despite their impressive history in doubles, neither Venus nor Serena has been selected for the singles wildcard entries, although one spot remains unassigned. The Wimbledon Championships are scheduled to take place from 29 June to 12 July 2026, with the women’s doubles featuring a field of 128 competitors.
This announcement follows Serena’s recent comeback at the Queen’s Club in London earlier this month after a near four-year absence from professional tennis, having last played at the 2022 US Open. In her initial match back, the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion teamed up with Canadian player Victoria Mboko, successfully defeating Erin Routliffe from New Zealand and American Nicole Melichar-Martinez. Unfortunately, the partnership was cut short when Mboko suffered an injury in a subsequent singles match, leading to her withdrawal from the tournament. The young player expressed her admiration for Serena, indicating a desire to compete together in the future.
In the wake of her Queen’s appearance, Serena is slated to participate in the German Open in Berlin, where she will join forces with Czech player Karolína Muchová. Excitement surrounding this pairing is palpable, with Muchová expressing her enthusiasm about partnering with such a celebrated athlete: “It doesn’t happen every day that such an amazing athlete… asks you to play tennis.” Their campaign is set to commence with their first match on 16 June.
While Serena considers a potential return to singles play in the future, she acknowledged the need for further training. “I can’t say no,” she mentioned to reporters prior to her Queen’s participation, suggesting that her competitive spirit still burns brightly.
Venus, who is aged 45, has had a challenging season, having lost all seven of her singles matches thus far. Nevertheless, she managed to secure victory in a doubles match at the Madrid Open earlier this year. She was also poised to compete in doubles alongside American Hailey Baptiste at the French Open, which marked her return to the tournament after a five-year hiatus; however, the pair withdrew on the day of their first-round clash, with no reason disclosed by the organisers.
The upcoming Wimbledon will not only be a test of the Williams sisters’ enduring prowess on the court but also an opportunity for fans to witness the remarkable bond that has seen them through two decades of competition. As they prepare to captivate a new generation of tennis enthusiasts, the anticipation builds for what could be a memorable return to the hallowed grass of Wimbledon.
