Cheri Oteri, the popular actress known for her role in *Scary Movie 6*, has opened up about her recent health struggles following a breast cancer diagnosis. During an appearance on Chelsea Handler’s podcast, *Dear Chelsea*, on June 10, the 63-year-old actress revealed her battle with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a non-invasive form of breast cancer, and discussed the surprising support she received from former First Lady, Dr. Jill Biden.

Oteri disclosed that her path crossed with Dr. Biden’s at a Milken Institute dinner held in April, shortly after she received her diagnosis. The actress, who hails from Pennsylvania, found common ground with Biden, who also has roots in the neighbouring state of Delaware. As the two conversed with accomplished women at the event discussing healthcare topics, Oteri reflected on how serendipitous it was to be in such an environment immediately after her diagnosis.
“This is so serendipitous,” she noted, recalling how the conversation resonated with her situation. DCIS, while not life-threatening, requires surgical intervention to remove affected tissue, and Oteri had already scheduled her surgery for April 26.
After their initial meeting, Oteri felt compelled to confide in Dr. Biden about her recent diagnosis. In a heartfelt exchange, Dr. Biden assured her, “All right, you’re gonna get tired of me,” and promised to accompany Oteri through her journey. The support and empathy Oteri received from Biden left a profound impact on her. “I was blown away,” she explained.
Following their first encounter, the two women arranged to meet for coffee in Los Angeles, where they spent two hours discussing Oteri’s situation and life in general. Oteri described Biden as a person with “a huge heart”, noting that the former First Lady has continually checked in on her wellbeing throughout her treatment process.
In a playful exchange, Oteri remarked on the ongoing communication from Dr. Biden, saying, “She goes, ‘You’re gonna get sick of me texting you,’” to which Oteri jokingly replied, “Seriously, Jill, knock it off.” Despite Oteri reassuring her that she felt stable and wasn’t in pain after the surgery, she couldn’t help but laugh when Biden referenced her husband, Joe Biden’s own battle with cancer, adding a moment of light-heartedness to a serious conversation.
Oteri also took the opportunity to address the importance of seeking second opinions regarding medical treatment. She revealed that she had to undergo a second surgery because not all of the cancer was removed in the first procedure. This experience underscores the complex nature of cancer treatment, as well as the importance of patient advocacy.
When Handler inquired about Oteri’s current state of health, the actress expressed optimism, stating she was doing well and didn’t require the pain medication prescribed by her doctor. Handler, ever the comedian, joked she would gladly take it off Oteri’s hands.
With her openness and vulnerability, Cheri Oteri is not only navigating her own health challenges but also shining a light on the critical issue of breast cancer awareness and the significance of support systems during such trying times. Her friendship with Dr. Biden serves as a reminder of the power of empathy, particularly among women facing similar challenges.
As Oteri continues her recovery journey, her story highlights the importance of community and connection in times of need, further illustrating how friendships forged in unexpected circumstances can provide essential comfort and encouragement.
