A 15-year-old girl from Oklahoma is currently fighting for her life in intensive care after reportedly participating in a troubling social media trend known as the “Benadryl Challenge.” Leah Presson attempted to consume large quantities of the over-the-counter allergy medication, diphenhydramine, in pursuit of a high but instead suffered life-threatening consequences, including seizures and cardiac arrest.

Leah has been hospitalised at Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City for several days. Her father, Richard Presson, revealed that she experienced seizures that resulted in cardiac arrest, leading to a critical medical condition where she has shown no brain activity. Initially, her family suspected her symptoms might stem from her existing asthma condition. However, the gravity of Leah’s situation became evident when medical professionals informed her father that tests revealed no brain activity.

In a heartfelt interview, Presson recounted the moment he arrived at the hospital and was met by a chaplain who indicated the seriousness of Leah’s condition. “I was met by the chaplain, and they said, ‘We need to pray,’” he shared, highlighting the family’s struggles as they cope with the dire situation. “I don’t even want to think about a funeral because I feel like there’s still hope… I believe in miracles, that she’s definitely a miracle baby,” he added, expressing his determination to remain optimistic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has long raised alarms about the risks associated with excessive dosages of diphenhydramine, the active ingredient in Benadryl. In a warning released in October 2020, the FDA cautioned that taking higher-than-recommended amounts of the medication could lead to serious health issues, including heart problems, seizures, coma, and even death. It appears that Leah’s participation in the online challenge provides a stark example of the dangers involved.
The so-called “Benadryl Challenge” has become popular on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, where users share videos of themselves attempting to consume large amounts of the drug. In response to the trend, TikTok has stated that content promoting harmful behaviours violates its Community Guidelines and is routinely removed from the platform. They have implemented measures to redirect searches related to the challenge, directing users instead to resources promoting safety and substance abuse awareness.
Similarly, YouTube has reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict policies against content that encourages dangerous challenges that could lead to severe injury or death. Both platforms are working to ensure that users are informed about the risks associated with these dangerous trends.
As health officials continue to alert the public about the perils of such viral challenges, Leah’s family is left to grapple with the potential consequences of this trend. Richard Presson expressed his frustration and concern, stating, “I just want everybody to be aware of where they can educate their kids. These challenges are just silly, and they need to be educated so it doesn’t happen again.” His remarks underscore the need for greater awareness surrounding the risks associated with social media trends and their impact on youth behaviour.
In light of this tragic incident, the Presson family has decided to donate Leah’s organs, potentially saving the lives of up to 90 other individuals. Their choice reflects Leah’s lifelong desire to help and give to others, reinforcing the painful irony that a misguided quest for excitement could lead to such heartbreaking circumstances.
As the health community continues to emphasise education and prevention, Leah’s story stands as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by social media challenges. It calls for urgent discussions around mental health, substance abuse, and the importance of guiding today’s youth towards safer choices.
