A 38-year-old man from Arizona died after an incident on the California coast, prompting local authorities to issue warnings about sea safety. Valentine was reported missing on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 13, after first responders received a call around 1 p.m. that indicated a scuba diver had disappeared. However, upon arrival, authorities determined that it was actually a swimmer who was unaccounted for.

In response to the report, a large-scale, multi-agency search was initiated. Personnel were deployed to comb the water and surrounding shoreline for any signs of the missing man. A lifeguard was sent into the water where Valentine had last been seen, while additional teams searched along the beach.

Tragically, Valentine was located near the rocky coast at the south end of Sand Dollar Beach. First responders attempted to perform life-saving measures before he was transported by U.S. Coast Guard helicopter to a medical facility, where he was later pronounced dead. The MCSO confirmed his identity and released a statement expressing their condolences to Valentine’s family and friends.
Amy Rowan, Valentine’s sister, shared the heartbreaking news on Facebook, mentioning that he had been attending a family reunion in Big Sur when the tragedy occurred. In her post, she urged for privacy as the family processes the overwhelming grief of losing a husband, son, brother, and uncle.
In light of this incident, friends of the Valentine family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist his wife with funeral expenses and provide additional support during this challenging time. Within just a week, the fundraiser has accumulated over £8,800, showcasing the community’s solidarity and support for the family.
Following the unfortunate event, Big Sur Fire Chief Matt Harris cautioned beachgoers about existing ocean conditions. He strongly advised visitors to remain vigilant and to assess their capabilities before entering the water, especially given the strong tides and slippery rocks along the coastline. “The ocean is unforgiving,” Harris warned, highlighting the need for caution particularly due to the current significant northwest swell.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in coastal activities, particularly in areas known for their unpredictable sea conditions. The MCSO’s engagement with family and community post-incident reflects both sensitivity and the desire to promote safety awareness among those enjoying the ocean.
As the Valentine family begins to navigate their loss, the community continues to rally around them, demonstrating the profound impact of grief and the importance of support during life’s most difficult moments.
