The body of a hiker from Oregon who went missing over the weekend in Alaska was tragically discovered on Monday, June 15, after an extensive search operation. The rescue operation commenced in the evening of Sunday, June 14, at approximately 9:37 PM local time. Didier informed authorities that he was disoriented and lacking essential survival gear, including food, water, and appropriate clothing. His last communication with emergency services was recorded shortly before 10:24 PM that night.
Members of the Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad (KVRS) began their search efforts on foot from the Silvis Lake Trail, but sadly, their attempts to locate Didier were unsuccessful that evening. The search continued into the following morning, with the team deploying a helicopter at 9:40 AM on June 15 to scout the area around Didier’s last known location.

Heartbreakingly, authorities confirmed that an adult male, believed to be Didier, was found deceased, partially submerged at the base of a cliff. According to the Alaska State Troopers, challenging conditions prevented the recovery of his body immediately, and they planned to return the next day for a more secure retrieval operation. Didier’s next of kin have been notified about the unfortunate incident.
At the time of reporting, officials from the Alaska State Troopers had not disclosed further details concerning the circumstances that led to Didier’s death or the outcomes of the recovery efforts.

Ketchikan, where the incident occurred, is situated on Revillagigedo Island at the southern tip of Alaska’s Inside Passage. The Deer Mountain Trail, which leads to a peak rising 2,600 feet, is known for its difficulty, with the ascent taking approximately three and a half hours.
The Alaska state website cautions hikers about the unpredictable weather conditions associated with Deer Mountain, recommending that individuals undertaking the trail be well-prepared. It emphasizes the importance of informing friends or family about hiking plans and carrying sufficient safety gear to ensure a safe experience in the wilderness.
Additionally, hikers are warned that snow can linger on the trails well into the summer months, underscoring the necessity of having the proper equipment and knowledge of the area’s terrain.
The tragic conclusion to Didier’s hiking expedition serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities, especially in remote and challenging environments. As search and rescue teams continue to emphasise the importance of preparedness, the local community mourns the loss of a fellow outdoor enthusiast.
