A man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for crashing his vehicle into a school bus in Arizona last year, resulting in a significant number of injuries among students and staff. Nicolas Luis Rodriguez, aged 26, faced sentencing on June 15, 2026, after pleading guilty to several charges, including three counts of aggravated assault causing severe injury and one count of criminal damage. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been ordered to pay nearly $180,000 in restitution to those affected by the incident.

The crash occurred on April 1, 2025, whilst students and staff from the Kingman Unified School District were en route to a conference in Tucson. As the bus was travelling along the I-10 near Marana, it was struck by Rodriguez’s vehicle. Reports indicate that the bus was nearing the end of a six-hour journey at the time of the collision.

The impact of the crash was severe, with 41 individuals on the bus—including 35 students—sustaining injuries. Tragically, one child lost their hand due to the incident, while several others were seriously hurt, highlighting the extent of the accident’s ramifications.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), Rodriguez admitted to troopers that he was driving recklessly in a rush to get to a job interview. He reportedly swerved across multiple lanes to avoid missing his turn. Furthermore, it was revealed that he had consumed a THC vape earlier that day, raising concerns about his state of mind while driving.
During the court proceedings, emotional testimonies were heard. Julie Palz spoke on behalf of her daughter Kaitlyn Holme, a student who required surgery following the collision. Holme expressed her ongoing struggles, particularly the persistent pain and itching associated with her injuries. Her statement starkly illustrated the long-lasting impact of the crash on her life, as she lamented that her military aspirations may be unattainable due to her injuries.
Rodriguez, in court, expressed remorse for his actions and acknowledged the devastation his behaviour caused. “Many innocent people’s lives were changed that day, changed in ways that I will never be able to process,” he told Judge Casey McGinley. He emphasised that he would likely carry the weight of the accident and its victims with him for the rest of his life.
The public response to the incident has been substantial, with calls for stricter penalties for impaired drivers. The consequences of the crash have prompted discussions within the community regarding road safety and the accountability of those who drive under the influence of drugs.
Authorities have spotlighted the dangerous consequences of impaired driving, encouraging educational initiatives to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future. The DPS and local law enforcement continue to collaborate with community leaders to raise awareness about the importance of responsible driving.
As the community attempts to heal from this incident, many are left to ponder the lasting effects of reckless driving. With Rodriguez’s conviction, there is hope that justice has been served for the victims and their families, while also serving as a warning to others about the dangers of driving while impaired.
