Three instructors have been charged with homicide in Brazil following the tragic death of a 21-year-old woman who fell from a bridge during a rope-jumping event. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas plummeted from a height of approximately 40 metres (131 feet) on Saturday, June 13, when she was not securely attached to any safety ropes, prompting investigations into the event and the practices of the instructors involved.

The three men charged in connection with the incident are Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff, aged 32, Vitor de Freitas Goncalves, 27, and Maicon Fernandes Cintra, 42. They were arrested on June 14 after allegedly attempting to flee, and they remain in custody awaiting further legal proceedings. The charges they face, which include homicide with eventual intent, relate to actions that resulted in death without the necessity of proving a deliberate intention to kill.
According to reports from Brazilian media outlets, de Freitas had signed up for what was claimed to be a guided experience from the Ponte do Esqueleto, or Skeleton Bridge, located in Limeira, São Paulo. This bridge, previously part of a disused railway line, serves as a site for a type of jump that involves swinging beneath the structure rather than the traditional bungee jump, which employs elastic cords for bouncing.

Local police investigator Andrea Levy noted that the instructors admitted to authorities that de Freitas was not connected to any safety ropes prior to the jump. However, when questioned, they reportedly did not recall who was responsible for ensuring her safety equipment was checked. This failure of oversight has been cited as a significant factor in the unfortunate events that followed.
Witnesses to the incident have provided alarming accounts, stating that de Freitas was thrown from the bridge without any rope attached, leading to her fatal fall. Emergency services were summoned to the scene, including a police helicopter, but tragically, she was declared dead on arrival. Footage that surfaced online appears to capture the moments leading up to the jump, where de Freitas is seen, helmeted, being prepared for her leap while staff members carry her towards the edge.
Reports indicate that, just before her fall, a bystander shouted, “Guys, the rope!” pointing to a left-behind safety rope on the bridge. This indication raises serious concerns about the safety protocols that were allegedly ignored during this activity.
As the investigation unfolds, Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy has highlighted a broader failure, stating that the group running the jump lacked proper authorisation and was operating without regulatory oversight. “They ended up organising this event, and this fatality happened… due to a failure to verify and supervise the placement of the rope on the victim’s jump,” she commented.
In light of this incident, questions are now being raised regarding the structural safety of the bridge itself and the overarching management of such extreme activities in Brazil. The Limeira City Council plans to escalate the issue by filing a complaint against the federal government, asserting that the area had long been identified as hazardous without sufficient preventative measures being implemented. Mayor Murilo Félix echoed these concerns, stating, “It is necessary to determine responsibility for the lack of access control to a federal area that has presented known risks for years.”
Prior to her untimely death, de Freitas had recently completed her studies in physical education and sports management. She was said to have purchased the jump experience, a decision that would ultimately lead to tragedy and set in motion a chain of events questioning the regulation and management of adventure sports in the country.
As the police continue their investigation and the instructors face charges in court, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of safety in adventure activities and the crucial need for compliance with established regulations.
