Katie Thurston, known for her appearance on ‘The Bachelorette’, has recently announced a pause in her treatment for stage 4 breast cancer. Taking to her social media channel, Boobie Broadcast, the 35-year-old shared her decision to prioritise mental well-being during the summer months. Although recent scans revealed no evidence of cancer spreading to her liver, high enzyme levels and inflammation have raised concerns among her medical team.

The former reality star revealed that her doctors have proposed a liver biopsy along with steroid treatment to address the inflammation. However, Thurston has opted to defer these procedures for at least a month. “In short, we don’t know why,” she conveyed in her update, explaining her choice to take a break. Thurston has a scheduled PET scan later in June, which she believes will provide more insight before she commits to additional treatments.

Addressing her apprehensions about needles, Thurston expressed her desire to step back from invasive procedures for the time being. She included a screenshot of her correspondence with her doctor, where she confidently declined the biopsy and new medication for mental health considerations. “For mental health reasons, I really need to take a break from all the pokes and surgeries and just try to enjoy a somewhat normal summer,” she stated.
Thurston has been open about her emotional struggles throughout her cancer journey, particularly highlighting her fear of needles. She recounted experiencing tears during her recent blood draws and an IV for an MRI, noting, “My left arm is tired of being poked.” The cumulative stress of treatments has led her to reconsider her approach, with Thurston indicating she might reintroduce lorazepam, a medication she had previously relied on to manage anxiety during medical appointments.
Her battle with cancer began when she announced her diagnosis in February 2025, which led to a series of treatments including a double mastectomy in April 2026. Reflecting on the journey a year after her diagnosis, she expressed uncertainty about the survival benefits of a double mastectomy for metastatic cancer, but affirmed her commitment to doing everything possible to increase her chances.
Despite the gravity of her situation, Thurston maintains a resilient outlook on life. She has made it clear that she refuses to label her condition as terminal. “No one is promised tomorrow. Why waste the days I’ve been given stressing about death?” she has stated, emphasising her focus on making the most of every day.
Thurston’s candid updates resonate with many who are facing similar struggles, as she fosters a sense of community through her ongoing conversations about health, treatment, and mental well-being. Her choice to take a break is not merely a pause in treatment but also an affirmation of self-care, underscoring the importance of prioritising mental health during challenging times.
As Katie Thurston continues to navigate her cancer journey, her willingness to share both her triumphs and tribulations inspires others to consider their own mental health alongside medical treatments. The former Bachelorette contestant is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, reminding us that even amidst trials, moments of joy and normalcy are valuable and necessary.
