In a harrowing tale of survival and resilience, Rose Henderson recounts the traumatic events that unfolded after a devastating car accident that left her 12-year-old son, Charlie, fighting for his life. What began as an ordinary Wednesday quickly spiralled into chaos when a collision altered the course of their lives forever.

Henderson, who was picking up Charlie from school that day, experienced a nightmare when their car was struck head-on at 60 miles per hour. The immediately terrifying scene revealed the tragic fate of the other vehicle’s occupants, who did not survive the crash, while Charlie sustained multiple serious injuries including a dislocated hip, a severely lacerated liver, punctured intestines, and severed pancreas. Despite her own injuries, which included a broken foot and bruised ribs, Henderson’s focus shifted entirely to her son’s urgent medical needs.
Following the crash, Charlie was rushed to Phoenix Children’s Hospital where he underwent an emergency six-hour surgery. “After his surgery, we were told it would be a two-week stay for recovery,” recalls Henderson. “But any hopes for a smooth recovery were soon dashed.” About two weeks into his hospital stay, Charlie began exhibiting alarming symptoms, including severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
Initially unsure of the complications involved, Henderson soon learned that her son had contracted pediatric Clostridioides difficile, commonly known as C. diff, during his hospitalisation. This bacterium can cause severe infections in the colon, leading to symptoms that range from mild diarrhoea to life-threatening damage. “I didn’t even know what C. diff was,” Henderson admitted, underscoring the bewildering experience that followed.
As the days passed, Charlie’s condition worsened. The combination of his existing injuries and the infection left him emaciated and physically frail. “He was like a walking skeleton,” said Henderson. She vividly remembers moments of despair, including one instance where Charlie, weakened and uncertain, asked her, “Mom, am I dying?” Despite her instinct to reassure him, the gravity of the situation weighed heavily on her heart as a mother.
Fortunately, Charlie was discharged after a ten-day course of antibiotics, but relief was short-lived. Mere days at home saw the return of his symptoms, leading to a repeat visit to the emergency room. Tests confirmed that C. diff had reappeared, and he was again readmitted to hospital. Throughout this distressing ordeal, Henderson felt isolated and overwhelmed, struggling to comprehend the complexities of her son’s illness.
In search of answers and support, she became what she describes as a “research warrior.” She reached out online to connect with other parents facing similar challenges, ultimately finding a supportive community through the Peggy Lillis Foundation — an organisation focused on education and advocacy for those affected by C. diff. “I felt I wasn’t receiving all the information I needed,” she shared, explaining how connecting with other families and sharing experiences provided valuable insights into navigating her son’s health crisis.
Today, Charlie continues to face ongoing battles with C. diff, experiencing multiple recurrences that complicate his recovery. Henderson emphasised the need for caution when it comes to his treatment, highlighting the toll this infection has taken on him both physically and emotionally. “It’s been incredibly hard for him. He’s just tired of being sick,” she noted, with additional fears looming as they prepare for Charlie’s necessary hip surgery.
Despite the trials ahead, Rose Henderson remains resolute in her commitment to advocating for Charlie’s health. She plans to consult a gastrointestinal doctor to further investigate the recurring symptoms he experiences. “I’m terrified because he’s had so many recurrences,” she confessed. The unpredictability of C. diff means that managing Charlie’s health is a continuous struggle; it is a spectre that hangs over their lives as they navigate the aftermath of the accident.
Through this arduous experience, the unwavering bond between mother and son has only grown stronger. Henderson has channelled her energy not only into caring for Charlie but also into raising awareness around C. diff, hoping that sharing their story might offer comfort and guidance to others facing similar health challenges. As she boldly faces an uncertain future, her son’s spirit remains a central source of resilience in their journey together.
