OG Anunoby, the standout player from the New York Knicks, is making headlines for more than just his on-court performance. Following the team’s crucial Game 4 victory in the NBA Finals, Anunoby is now focused on a cause close to his heart—supporting rescue cats. The basketball star has teamed up with Royal Canin, VCA Animal Hospitals, and the Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) to promote the adoption of shelter pets.

In his latest initiative, Anunoby has curated a collection of adoptable cats dubbed “OG’s Starting Five”. This group comprises five charming felines from ACC, the largest animal shelter system in New York City. Each of these cats is awaiting a forever home and comes with a unique set of qualities that make them perfect companions.

Katy Hansen, the director of communications at ACC, expressed her gratitude for Anunoby’s commitment to helping shelter animals. “OG has been inspiring New Yorkers all season long, and now he’s helping create life-changing moments for shelter pets. We’re so grateful he’s chosen to use this exciting moment to help cats in need find loving homes,” she stated.
The “Starting Five” selection includes cats that have caught the attention of the Knicks player for their affectionate personalities. The lineup features Sammy, a sweet-natured cat who craves attention, Penne, who is described as the “perfect lapcat,” and Lil Leo, a lively feline known for his amusing stature. Other stars of the selection are Damu, a dapper senior tuxedo cat, and Roxie, a petite yet spirited cat weighing just five pounds.
In addition to Anunoby’s endorsement, the adopted cats will benefit from generous support upon finding new homes. Each cat from “OG’s Starting Five” will receive a year’s supply of food courtesy of Royal Canin and complimentary health check-ups for an entire year from VCA Animal Hospitals.
Royal Canin is further enhancing this initiative by pledging a significant contribution of $300,000 to shelters across the nation. This funding aims to expand support for animal rescue efforts, reinforcing the commitment to creating a better life for shelter pets, as highlighted by Don MacIntosh, a vice president at Royal Canin North America. “There is an incredible energy in New York right now, and we’re honoured to partner with OG Anunoby to channel that excitement toward a shared purpose,” he commented.
The current pet adoption campaign aligned with Anunoby’s image epitomises the synergy between sports and community service. The initiative not only encourages adoption but also raises awareness about the plight of shelter animals. For many, the passion displayed by public figures like Anunoby can inspire potential pet owners to consider adopting rather than buying.
If you are interested in adopting one of these special cats from “OG’s Starting Five”, the ACC website provides all necessary information including adoption procedures and details about the cats. Finding a loving home for these wonderful animals is just a click away, and this collaboration may just be the encouragement needed for some to take that step toward pet ownership.
By merging his basketball stardom with a noble cause, OG Anunoby is demonstrating that the influence of athletes can extend beyond the court. His efforts are likely to have a lasting impact on the lives of not just the cats he champions but also on the people who may choose to welcome them into their homes.
