A truck driver from Atlanta, Paris Thompson, has expressed profound gratitude towards two Good Samaritans who sprang into action after he was trapped under his vehicle following a serious accident. The incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of May 28, left Thompson pinned beneath his overturned truck near Cascade Road and the Cascade Skating Rink.

Speaking to a local news outlet, Thompson recounted the harrowing experience, stating that it served as a wake-up call, fundamentally altering his perspective on life. “It just shook my soul, and it made me alive,” he described his feelings after the ordeal. “I’m about to live, not just be alive,” he added, reflecting on the renewed sense of purpose he now feels.
Thompson was driving when, for reasons he cannot recall, his truck lost control and flipped over. He awoke in a state of panic, trapped under the vehicle. “The only thing I can remember is just kind of waking up in a panic mode. Luckily I was conscious enough to stay with the situation long enough to where I’m still here,” he reflected on that critical moment when he realised his predicament.
Fortunately, two bystanders, Mikeal Collins and Joshua Moses, were leaving the skating rink when they witnessed the truck’s overturning and heard Thompson’s cries for help. “I heard the voice of somebody screaming — a man that’s screaming for their life,” Moses recounted about the chaos at the scene. Upon realising that someone was in distress, they rushed to assist, retrieving a jack while an off-duty police officer joined the effort.
Together, the group worked to free Thompson as emergency responders began to arrive. Collins emphasised the collective effort, saying, “Everybody played a part in it, and I just really wanted to make sure he was safe getting that pressure off his head.” Their swift actions ultimately led to Thompson being rescued from the wreckage, a moment celebrated by bystanders with applause as he was pulled from beneath the vehicle.
After the accident, Thompson was admitted to the intensive care unit at Grady Memorial Hospital, where he spent nine days recovering from his injuries. The accident had required him to undergo surgery on his neck, and he also suffered significant road rash. “I have pretty bad road rash to where it’s down to the skin,” he mentioned regarding his physical state post-accident.
Despite the severity of the situation, Thompson is now recovering at home, grateful for the chance to share his story. In a heartfelt message to his rescuers, he expressed his desire to meet them. “Mike, Josh, and the Dark Soldier, my soldiers, thank y’all. I love y’all,” he said affectionately. “I can’t wait to meet y’all.”
