The former site of Geauga Lake amusement park in Aurora, Ohio, has undergone a significant transformation, reopening its gates as Aurora Park at Geauga Lake. The first phase of this revitalised community space opened to the public on October 25, 2023, marking an exciting new chapter for the 750-acre area that has a rich history entwined with amusement and entertainment.

According to local officials, the redevelopment of this once-abandoned site aims to provide residents with a welcoming destination for leisure and recreation. “What a great day this will be for Aurora and Northwest Ohio,” remarked Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin ahead of the park’s launch. “Following years of decline and abandonment, this beautiful property will again be open for public enjoyment, thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make it happen!”

Originally established in 1888, Geauga Lake was first a picnic area and swimming venue before expanding to host thrilling rides, roller coasters, and family attractions. The park gained a new dimension in 1970 with the introduction of SeaWorld Ohio, which provided a marine-themed experience alongside the amusement offerings. The park remained a popular destination for years.

The site experienced several ownership changes over the decades. In 2000, it was rebranded to Six Flags Ohio, and shortly thereafter, it was renamed Six Flags Worlds of Adventure when SeaWorld Ohio was absorbed into its operations. Despite its initial success, the park ultimately faced challenges and closed in 2007. By September 2016, Wildwater Kingdom, a water park that had opened in 2005, also ceased operations. The land was subsequently purchased by the city of Aurora for $5.3 million in late 2024.
Following a period of inactivity, the city commenced revitalisation efforts in early 2026. The recent opening celebrates the completion of the initial nine acres of the park, which has been designed with community engagement in mind. Visitors can now enjoy an open-air plaza where ticket booths from the amusement park have been repurposed. This newly created gathering space features expansive grassy areas leading to the scenic Lakefront Terrace, which provides picturesque views of Geauga Lake. Additionally, a self-serve rental kiosk offers kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for those looking to engage with the water.
The inaugural phase of Aurora Park boasts ample public amenities, including seating, picnic areas, restroom facilities, and parking. Mayor Womer Benjamin highlighted the nostalgic elements integrated into the park’s design, revealing that two of the original SeaWorld gatehouse pavilions have been restored. The park also features a retro rocket ship and memorabilia such as the iconic Raging Wolf Bob’s car from one of the former roller coasters, celebrating the site’s long-standing legacy of fun.
Looking towards the future, there are ambitious plans to enhance the Aurora Park experience. Upcoming developments are set to include a traditional swimming pool in place of the old wave pool, as well as the addition of a rock climbing area. Sports courts, an amphitheatre, and a public beach are also on the agenda. Furthermore, an accessible play area that incorporates a ride from Wildwater Kingdom is slated for completion by 2027.
The evolution of Geauga Lake from a bustling amusement destination to a revitalised community hub marks a significant step forward for the city of Aurora. As construction continues and new facilities are introduced, local residents can eagerly anticipate a destination that not only embraces the rich heritage of the site but also fosters community connections and outdoor enjoyment. This development promises to breathe fresh life into an area once defined by its rides and attractions, offering a cohesive space for recreation and relaxation in the heart of the community.
