Cardiologist Mowed Down Nurse Trying to Help Crash Victim, Then Fled the Scene Without Rendering Aid: Police

A tragic incident on a California highway has culminated in a significant legal resolution, following the death of a young mother who was trying to assist a crash victim. Juliana Ramos, a dedicated mother of three and a certified nursing assistant, was killed in February 2021, just two days shy of her 27th birthday. Allegedly, her life was cut short by James Leonard Comazzi, a cardiologist, who has since been sentenced to eight months in jail.

The unfortunate event occurred on the night of 10 February 2021, when Ramos encountered a serious accident involving a Hyundai and a commercial vehicle. Witnesses reported that Ramos, demonstrating a commendable spirit of compassion, immediately left her car to help the injured driver still seated in his vehicle.

However, as Ramos was attending to the crash victim, Comazzi is accused of driving his vehicle recklessly between the two cars. This manoeuvre resulted in a devastating collision that claimed Ramos’s life instantly. Following the incident, rather than rendering assistance to her, Comazzi fled the scene, prompting an eight-month investigation by the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

Comazzi was arrested in October 2021, with charges including felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. Earlier this year, in March 2023, he opted to plead no contest to these charges. This legal choice allowed him to acknowledge the charges without confessing guilt, ultimately leading to his sentencing.

During the court proceedings, Ramos’s family expressed their profound sorrow and frustration over the loss of their beloved family member. Her niece, Ivette Lopez, highlighted the family’s anguish at Comazzi’s actions and questioned the ethics of a medical professional fleeing the scene of an accident. “What kind of doctor in any specialty does that?” Lopez asked, reflecting the family’s sentiment that justice had not been served adequately.

At Comazzi’s sentencing, Lopez and other family members emphasised Ramos’s selfless nature and the tragedy of her untimely death. They had previously set up a GoFundMe page to celebrate her memory, where they noted her desire to help those in need, demonstrating her generous spirit.

Comazzi’s sentence of eight months in jail has left Ramos’s family feeling disheartened. They believe the punishment was disproportionately lenient, especially when considering the tragic consequences of his actions. During the hearing, Lopez articulated their anguish, questioning the rationale behind the sentencing, which appeared to take into account Comazzi’s age and lack of prior criminal history. “But what about Juli? Did her age not matter?” Lopez added, conveying the deep wound left by the loss of a loved one.

In his defence, Comazzi did express remorse during the proceedings, acknowledging the “profound brokenness” his actions had inflicted on Ramos’s family. His incongruous profession as a cardiologist—tasked with saving lives—only deepened the tragedy of his alleged actions that night.

This tragic case highlights several pressing issues, including driver accountability, the responsibilities of medical professionals, and the need for justice for victims of reckless behaviour. The complexity of human interaction in moments of crisis, as illustrated by Ramos’s noble intent to help despite the dangers, stands in stark contrast to Comazzi’s alleged actions.
